(PRESS RELEASE) LEIDEN, 17-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Marking a decade since its debut in South Korea, IKEA has opened the doors to its newest store, IKEA Gangdong, located within the bustling Gangdong I-Park The River complex in Seoul. This is the company’s fifth store in the country and the first to be integrated into a mixed-use development, combining retail, business, and entertainment spaces to create an immersive customer experience.

The strategic location and well-connected transport links make it easier than ever for Seoul residents to access IKEA’s extensive range of affordable home furnishings and expert design solutions. The store displays around 7,400 products, with 3,700 items available for immediate purchase and the rest available via delivery or pickup services.

Tolga Öncu, Retail Manager (COO) of Ingka Group, shared his enthusiasm: “South Korea is a key market in our global footprint, and the opening of IKEA Gangdong reflects our long-term commitment to growing here. We aim to make home furnishing more accessible and sustainable for more people in and around Seoul.”

IKEA Gangdong isn’t just another store—it’s a step forward in IKEA’s sustainability journey. It includes a dedicated shop for sustainable living, a circular hub promoting reuse and recycling, a furniture buy-back service, and offers free spare parts. The store uses geothermal energy for its heating and cooling systems, and all IKEA truck deliveries in Seoul will be handled by electric vehicles to support the company’s ambition to achieve zero emissions.

With plans to invest more than €300 million in South Korea in the coming years, IKEA aims to further modernize its stores, expand into new formats, and enhance its omnichannel offerings to serve customers more efficiently.

This launch also reflects IKEA’s broader global expansion. New store openings are on the horizon in New Zealand, India, and the United States. In the UK, the highly anticipated Oxford Street location will open its doors to customers on May 1st, continuing the company’s mission to meet customers where they are.
