Garanti BBVA and WWF Türkiye Complete Key Projects for Wildlife Protection and Forest Fire Prevention

(IN BRIEF) Garanti BBVA and WWF Türkiye have successfully completed three new projects as part of their ‘Türkiye’s Life: Fire Management Grant Program,’ launched to mitigate forest fire risks and support wildlife conservation. The projects included efforts to protect caracal populations, develop an “eco-kit” for fire prevention in the Köyceğiz-Gökova region, and implement fire-resilient production models in Izmir. These initiatives promote fire prevention strategies, sustainable practices, and community awareness to safeguard Turkey’s forests and biodiversity.

(PRESS RELEASE) ISTANBUL, 22-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Garanti BBVA and WWF Türkiye have announced the successful completion of three new projects under the ‘Türkiye’s Life: Fire Management Grant Program,’ aimed at enhancing forest fire prevention and promoting fire-resilient practices. This initiative, which began in June 2022, supports various fire prevention projects across Turkey, focusing on wildlife protection, eco-friendly fire management, and sustainable production methods.

One of the projects, led by Natura, concentrated on safeguarding caracals and other wildlife in the Marmaris region by tracking animals, including the release of a tagged female caracal named Ayda, and raising awareness within local communities about coexistence with regional wildlife. In another effort, the Association for Equal Opportunities and a Sustainable Future developed an innovative “eco-kit” aimed at improving fire prevention strategies in the Köyceğiz-Gökova region, blending local knowledge with modern approaches to educate newcomers to the area. The third project, initiated by the Derivation Economics Association, explored fire-resilient production methods, piloting the planting of fire-resistant tree species and promoting sustainable agricultural practices through workshops and webinars.

These efforts are part of a larger strategy to build fire-resistant settlements and develop long-term solutions to protect Turkey’s forests and biodiversity. Garanti BBVA, in partnership with WWF Türkiye, has been instrumental in driving these initiatives forward, contributing significantly to national fire prevention strategies and promoting greater community involvement in environmental protection.
