Evonik Completes Global Transition of PU-Additive Production to Green Electricity, Strengthening Sustainability Commitment

(IN BRIEF) Evonik has completed the transition of its global PU-additive production sites to green electricity, aligning with its sustainability goals of reducing emissions and improving production efficiency. This shift applies to the company’s amine and silicone platforms, and includes smaller production sites globally. Evonik is committed to a 25% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. The conversion strengthens the company’s position as a key partner for sustainable solutions in industries such as automotive, construction, and consumer goods.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 8-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Evonik has successfully completed the transition of its global polyurethane (PU) additive production sites to green electricity, marking a significant step in the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices. The entire global production footprint of Evonik’s Comfort & Insulation business line now operates on renewable energy.

This milestone includes the conversion of Evonik’s amine and silicone platforms, along with its smaller PU-additive production sites, ranging from Hopewell, USA to Isehara, Japan. The shift to green electricity highlights Evonik’s dedication to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable production across its global operations. As part of its sustainability efforts, Evonik has committed to reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% by 2030 and to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The transition strengthens Evonik’s ability to meet the growing sustainability demands from both consumer and industrial markets. By improving production efficiency and enhancing capabilities, the company further solidifies its role as a reliable, long-term partner to the polyurethane industry, catering to evolving customer needs in sectors such as automotive, construction, coatings, furniture, and consumer goods.

Roberto Vila-Keller, Head of the Comfort & Insulation business line, commented on the achievement: “The conversion of our amine and silicone platforms to green electricity is a key milestone for us. By transitioning all PU-additive sites to renewable energy, and focusing on reducing fossil-based raw materials, we are directly addressing our customers’ demand for sustainable solutions and contributing to a greener future for the PU industry.”

This transition to green electricity has been facilitated through the use of green certificates and renewable electricity supply agreements, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), which have ensured a stable and reliable supply of renewable energy to these sites for several years. For instance, the Wittenburg release agent site in Germany has been operating with renewable electricity agreements since early 2022.

Chad Henneke, Head of Production and Technology for Comfort & Insulation, expressed pride in the company’s efforts: “The successful conversion of our PU-additives and shared asset plants to renewable energy is a testament to our teams’ dedication to environmental responsibility. We continue to pioneer production methods that support both our customers and the environment.”
