Evonik and Fuhua Launch Joint Venture in China to Produce Specialty Hydrogen Peroxide for Key Industries

(IN BRIEF) Evonik and Fuhua Tongda Chemicals have formed a joint venture in Leshan, China, to produce specialty hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for industries like solar panels, semiconductors, and food packaging. With Evonik holding a 51% stake, the venture aims to address the growing market demand for H2O2, with production set to start in 2026. This partnership leverages Evonik’s global expertise and Fuhua’s local infrastructure, following a prior licensing agreement for a large hydrogen peroxide megaplant. The venture supports sustainable solutions in green energy and electronics, as hydrogen peroxide is environmentally friendly and widely used in various industries.

(PRESS RELEASE) LESHAN, China, 24-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Evonik and Fuhua Tongda Chemicals Company (Fuhua) have formed a joint venture in Leshan, Sichuan Province, to produce and market hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in China. The new entity, Evonik Fuhua New Materials (Sichuan) Co., Ltd., sees Evonik hold a 51% stake, with Fuhua owning the remaining 49%. This collaboration aims to meet the growing market demand for specialty-grade hydrogen peroxide used in applications such as solar panels, semiconductors, and food packaging. Production is expected to commence in the first half of 2026.

The venture will benefit from Evonik’s global market position and peroxide expertise, alongside Fuhua’s local infrastructure and networks. This partnership follows a license agreement signed in November 2023, where Evonik provided its H2O2 technology to Fuhua for the development of a 200-kiloton hydrogen peroxide megaplant. This plant will serve as a supplier of H2O2 for the new joint venture, which will further purify it for specialty applications.

Lauren Kjeldsen, head of Evonik’s Smart Materials division, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership in Asia Pacific, especially as the Active Oxygens business line aims to address challenges in areas like green energy and electronics. Fuhua Chairman Zhang Hua echoed this sentiment, highlighting the integration of their strengths to bring competitive products to the market.

Hydrogen peroxide is a critical component in various industries, including the production of photovoltaic cells for solar energy, pharmaceuticals, and food packaging. Its environmentally friendly breakdown into water and oxygen makes it a preferable option over certain chemical alternatives, contributing to sustainable production processes.
