Ericsson, HPE, and Intel Deliver First Cloud RAN 5G Call on Gen12 Server with Red Hat OpenShift

(IN BRIEF) Ericsson, in partnership with HPE and Intel, has successfully demonstrated a 5G Cloud RAN call on the HPE ProLiant Compute DL110 Gen12 server using Intel’s Xeon 6 SoC and Red Hat OpenShift. This proof point validates Ericsson’s Cloud RAN software portability across processor generations and its readiness to run on cloud-native infrastructures. CSPs benefit from AI-driven efficiency, flexible deployment options, and the ability to extend hardware lifecycles—all while maintaining open, multi-vendor compatibility. The collaboration marks a significant step toward industrializing Open RAN and modernizing telecom networks for future generations of wireless technology.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 20-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Ericsson, in collaboration with HPE and Intel, has achieved a breakthrough by successfully completing a Cloud RAN 5G call on the HPE ProLiant Compute DL110 Gen12 server powered by Intel’s latest Xeon 6 SoC. This milestone accelerates the industrialization of Open RAN, empowering communications service providers (CSPs) to roll out high-performance, scalable networks on open, cloud-native foundations built with Red Hat OpenShift.

By integrating Ericsson’s Cloud RAN software with Red Hat’s Kubernetes-based platform on purpose-built HPE servers, operators gain a future-proof solution that delivers AI-driven efficiency and unmatched deployment flexibility. The demonstration proves the software’s portability across successive processor generations, maximizing hardware utilization, simplifying rollouts, and extending lifecycle value—key drivers of operational and cost efficiency for CSPs.

This achievement underscores Ericsson’s leadership in the Cloud RAN ecosystem. By leveraging Red Hat OpenShift support for Intel Xeon 6, Ericsson is spearheading the shift to cloud-native architectures, enabling telecom operators to modernize networks with greater agility and realize faster time-to-market for new services. The open, multi-vendor approach ensures CSPs can choose from a broad array of hardware and software options to deploy 5G at scale.

“Industrializing Cloud RAN and delivering open, high-performing networks remains our top priority,” said Johan Hultell, Head of Product Line Cloud and Purpose Built 5G RAN at Ericsson. “Alongside HPE and Intel, we’re equipping CSPs with the confidence and flexibility they need to accelerate their Cloud RAN deployments.”

“Intel’s Xeon 6 SoC delivers exceptional performance-per-watt and built-in AI acceleration for intelligent network management,” commented Cristina Rodriguez, Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Communications Solutions Group. “This collaboration with Ericsson and HPE demonstrates our joint commitment to high-performance, AI-enabled Open RAN.”

“Designed for 6G readiness, the HPE ProLiant Compute DL110 Gen12 server meets the rigorous demands of Cloud RAN workloads,” added Fernando Castro Cristin, Vice President and General Manager of HPE’s Telco Infrastructure Business. “Our partnership accelerates network modernization with a scalable, cost-efficient solution for telco operators.”
