Ericsson and Vodafone Revolutionize Tunnel Connectivity with Innovative 5G Antennas in Arlinger Tunnel

(IN BRIEF) Vodafone and Ericsson have launched cutting-edge 5G connectivity in Arlinger Tunnel, Germany, using Ericsson’s advanced multiband mobile radio antennas. These antennas, designed to withstand tunnel-specific challenges such as vibrations and pressure changes, ensure seamless 5G coverage for Vodafone customers. This project enhances regional mobility and represents a significant milestone in digital infrastructure development. Ericsson and Vodafone’s partnership strengthens their commitment to providing reliable and high-performing mobile networks across diverse environments.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 9-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Vodafone and Ericsson have unveiled a groundbreaking development in tunnel connectivity with the successful deployment of Ericsson’s advanced multiband mobile radio antennas in the Arlinger Tunnel, located near Pforzheim, Germany. This installation marks the first operational deployment of Ericsson Antenna System (EAS), engineered specifically to provide robust and stable 5G coverage in tunnel environments where high levels of vibration and air pressure fluctuations are prevalent.

The Arlinger Tunnel, a crucial 1,400-meter stretch at the edge of the Black Forest region, serves as a key transport route for both car and rail commuters in Baden-Württemberg. Ensuring continuous and reliable mobile connectivity in such critical infrastructure is essential not only for convenience but for safety and operational efficiency. With the installation of five of Ericsson’s tunnel-optimized antennas, Vodafone customers traveling through the tunnel will now experience uninterrupted mobile reception, seamless voice calls, and high-speed data, even while underground.

The innovative Logarithmic Periodic antennas feature a unique aerodynamic cone shape, designed to minimize the impact of wind turbulence and pressure waves caused by passing vehicles and trains. This design reduces vibrations in the antenna structure, enhancing its durability and ensuring reliable transmission in challenging tunnel conditions. The antennas support multiple frequency bands and deliver high bandwidth, from 2G to 5G, catering to the demanding requirements of underground transport infrastructure.

Marc Hoelzer, Head of Network Development at Vodafone, emphasized the technical challenges involved in addressing dead spots in tunnels: “Closing dead spots in tunnels is particularly challenging due to the structural constraints. The movement of air masses caused by passing cars and trains generates vibrations that can impair the transmission and reception performance of antennas. Our goal is to overcome these challenges by using antennas with high wind resistance and secure installation, which the new Ericsson antennas perfectly meet.”

The Arlinger Tunnel installation is part of **Vodafone’s broader initiative to expand 5G coverage across Germany, with plans to equip additional tunnels with the new antenna technology.

Mikael Eriksson, Head of Ericsson Antenna System, commented on the importance of the project: “This project demonstrates the power of advanced antenna technology in solving real-world connectivity challenges. By enabling continuous 5G coverage in tunnels, we are ensuring that users remain connected whether traveling on trains or in vehicles on highways. Ericsson is committed to providing high-performance networks in every environment, including complex underground scenarios like this one.”

Peter Boch, Mayor of Pforzheim, added: “The Arlinger Tunnel is not just a transport route; it’s a vital part of our region’s mobility infrastructure. The ability to stay connected throughout the tunnel is an important milestone in modernizing our city’s digital landscape and improving the daily experience for our citizens.”

The Arlinger Tunnel deployment underscores the long-standing collaboration between Vodafone and Ericsson, combining technical expertise and infrastructure innovation to bring next-generation 5G connectivity to millions of users. This partnership reinforces Ericsson’s commitment to engineering excellence and innovative connectivity solutions in all environments.
