Düsseldorf to Cut CO₂ Emissions with New Bilfinger-Built Energy Center Utilizing Henkel’s Industrial Waste Heat

(IN BRIEF) Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, in partnership with Henkel and Bilfinger, is developing a new energy center to supply sustainable district heating to Düsseldorf’s southern districts. Using waste heat from Henkel’s power plant, the facility will reduce the city’s reliance on natural gas, cutting CO₂ emissions by 6,500 tons annually. Bilfinger is overseeing the project, handling all aspects from design to commissioning, with the energy center expected to supply up to 40% of the district heating needs in areas like Garath and Benrath.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 30-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadtwerke Düsseldorf has launched a pioneering project to decarbonize district heating in Düsseldorf, with Bilfinger selected as the comprehensive solution partner to develop an energy center that will harness industrial waste heat from Henkel’s power plant. The center, located on Henkel’s production site, will feed sustainable heat into Düsseldorf’s district heating network, supplying up to 40% of the heating needs for the city’s southern districts, including Garath and Benrath. This innovative approach is expected to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by 6,500 tons by reducing reliance on natural gas and repurposing heat generated from Henkel’s production processes.

Bilfinger, known for its engineering expertise, will handle the project from start to finish, overseeing all phases including planning, construction, and commissioning. This 700-square-meter energy center will feature four heat exchangers that efficiently redirect waste heat from Henkel’s combined heat and power generation into the district heating system.

Stadtwerke Düsseldorf CEO Julien Mounier highlighted the significance of this collaboration with Henkel and Bilfinger, describing it as a model for the heating transition essential to urban energy transformation. Bilfinger Group CEO Thomas Schulz emphasized the alignment of this project with Bilfinger’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability, expressing pride in supporting Düsseldorf’s decarbonization goals.
