Dürr Systems to Supply Advanced Painting Technology for BYD’s First European Passenger Car Plant

(IN BRIEF) Dürr Systems AG has been selected by BYD Auto Company Limited to supply advanced painting technology for BYD’s first European passenger car plant in Szeged, Hungary. The project involves the installation of over 120 robots, including the EcoRP series, for both interior and exterior painting of BYD’s New Energy Vehicles. The robots will be equipped with EcoBell3 atomizers to ensure high-quality, sustainable paint application. The system’s efficiency is enhanced by the EcoSupply P paint supply system, which minimizes paint waste, and automated cleaning robots to prepare vehicle bodies. This collaboration marks Dürr’s first order from BYD in the passenger car sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) BIETIGHEIM-BISSINGEN, 14-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Dürr Systems AG has secured its first commission from BYD Auto Company Limited, one of China’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers, to provide cutting-edge painting technology for the company’s new passenger car plant in Szeged, Hungary. This marks a significant milestone as BYD ventures into the European automotive market with its inaugural EV factory on the continent. Over the next few months, Dürr will supply and install more than 120 advanced robots, each equipped with EcoBell3 atomizers, to ensure high-quality and sustainable painting for BYD’s “New Energy Vehicles” (NEVs).

As one of the largest electric vehicle manufacturers in China, BYD is expanding its footprint into Europe and selected Dürr for its renowned expertise and advanced technology in automotive painting. Dr. Lars Friedrich, CEO of Automotive at Dürr, expressed his confidence in the partnership: “Dürr is the ideal partner for BYD, combining world-leading automotive painting technology with extensive experience in Hungary, where we have successfully completed several projects.” This contract marks Dürr’s first order from BYD in the passenger car segment, following a comprehensive audit by the Chinese manufacturer.

To ensure precision and efficiency in the painting process, the plant will feature Dürr’s latest EcoRP series robots, available in both six- and seven-axis configurations. The seven-axis robots will handle interior painting with remarkable flexibility and precision, while the six-axis robots are designed for exterior work. Additionally, Dürr will supply door, lid, and flap openers, enhancing the painting process’s effectiveness.

A key focus of the project is sustainability, with the EcoBell3 rotary atomizers playing a central role in minimizing paint consumption while maintaining flawless application. These atomizers provide consistent quality, uniform shade, and precise layer thickness, while the integrated cleaning and color-change systems enable quick transitions and reduced waste. BYD will also benefit from Dürr’s EcoSupply P paint supply system, which uses pigging technology to minimize paint and solvent usage, reducing both environmental impact and operational costs.

The project also includes automated body cleaning robots, which will ensure that dust and dirt are efficiently removed from vehicle bodies before painting. The flexible feather rollers are capable of adapting to various body shapes, ensuring thorough cleaning for the diverse range of BYD’s NEV models.
