The project uses Deutsche Telekom’s 5G network and edge data center technology to enhance efficiency. It will test automated driving technologies and create a digital twin of the port using LiDAR sensors. The initiative aims to address personnel shortages, improve safety, and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25%. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, the three-year project is expected to support future research and be applicable to other terminals.

(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 2-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a collaborative effort, Deutsche Telekom, Volkswagen Group Logistics, BIBA, and Unikie are pioneering automated logistics processes at the Emden port automotive terminal through the “AutoLog” project. This initiative leverages Deutsche Telekom’s 5G network APIs and an edge data center to enhance efficiency and innovation in the automotive terminal’s operations.

The project aims to automate workflows at automotive terminals, improving storage and logistics with automated driving technologies. The Volkswagen plant in Emden, connected directly to the port, will serve as the testing ground for this project, which will feature mixed operations of manually and automatically driven vehicles. The port of Emden handles over 1 million vehicles annually, making it a crucial hub in Volkswagen’s logistics network.

Key technologies include LiDAR sensors for creating a digital twin of the test field, and Unikie’s Marshalling Solution (UMS) for the precise control of vehicles. Communication with vehicles will occur via the public 5G network, ensuring stable and reliable data transmission.

The “AutoLog” project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport’s IHATEC II program, aims to address personnel shortages, enhance safety, and improve process efficiency. It also seeks to achieve sustainability goals, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by up to 25% and increasing terminal space efficiency by 20%.

The €5.8 million project, with €3.2 million in federal funding, will run for three years and involves various stakeholders, including TÜV Rheinland. The project’s findings are expected to benefit future research and be applicable to other terminals.
