Coral North FLNG Milestone Strengthens Mozambique’s Global Energy Role as Eni Expands Rovuma Basin Development

(IN BRIEF) Eni and its partners have successfully launched the hull of the Coral North FLNG facility, marking a key step forward in the development of Mozambique’s offshore natural gas resources. The project, located in the Rovuma Basin offshore Cabo Delgado, will become the country’s second floating LNG installation and is designed to build on the operational success of Coral South, which has been producing LNG since 2022. With a liquefaction capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per year, Coral North will double Mozambique’s LNG output to approximately 7 million tonnes annually, positioning the country as Africa’s third-largest LNG producer and significantly strengthening its role in global energy supply. The project is being delivered on schedule, with first production targeted for 2028, and incorporates design enhancements aimed at improving efficiency, reducing costs and minimizing execution risks. Beyond energy production, Coral North is expected to generate far-reaching economic benefits for Mozambique, including increased government revenues, job creation, support for local industries and expanded investment in community development initiatives. The project reflects Eni’s long-term commitment to Mozambique, where the company has operated for nearly two decades and has discovered some of Africa’s largest offshore gas resources, while also supporting social development through education, health and water access programs.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 16-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Eni, together with its partners China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), ENH, KOGAS and XRG, has marked a major milestone in Mozambique’s LNG development with the hull launch of the Coral North floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility in Geoje, South Korea. The event was attended by the Minister of Natural Resources of the Republic of Mozambique, Estevão Pale, and Eni’s Chief Operating Officer Global Natural Resources, Guido Brusco, underscoring the strategic importance of the project for both Mozambique and the global energy market.

Coral North will become the second advanced FLNG facility deployed in the Rovuma Basin, offshore Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique. The facility will develop gas resources from the northern section of the Coral reservoir, building directly on the operational experience gained from Coral South, which has been in production since 2022. Drawing on lessons learned from the first project, Coral North has been engineered to deliver higher efficiency, optimized performance and reduced execution risk, with the objective of achieving first production in line with the planned 2028 schedule.

With a liquefaction capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per annum, Coral North will significantly increase Mozambique’s LNG production capacity, lifting total national output to around 7 million tonnes per year. This expansion will elevate Mozambique to the position of Africa’s third-largest LNG producer and exporter, reinforcing its role as a strategically important supplier in the global energy landscape.

Beyond its production capacity, Coral North is expected to generate substantial economic benefits for Mozambique. The project is set to more than double the overall economic impact compared to the first FLNG development, through increased LNG revenues, job creation and new opportunities for local industries and suppliers. In parallel, the project will support expanded investments in local development initiatives, contributing to long-term socio-economic growth in the country.

Eni has maintained a continuous presence in Mozambique since 2006 and has played a central role in unlocking the country’s offshore gas potential. Between 2011 and 2014, the company identified major gas resources in the Rovuma Basin, including the Coral, Mamba Complex and Agulha reservoirs, with an estimated 2,400 billion cubic meters of gas in place. Coral South, the first project to monetize these resources, has already delivered more than 135 LNG cargoes to international markets. Alongside its industrial activities, Eni continues to support Mozambique’s broader development goals through initiatives focused on education, healthcare, water access and economic diversification, implemented as part of a comprehensive sustainability plan.
