APM Terminals and SANY Marine Ink Framework to Electrify 500 Terminal Tractors by 2030

(IN BRIEF) APM Terminals and SANY Marine have signed a Master Framework Agreement to replace around 500 diesel terminal tractors with battery-electric models by 2030, reinforcing APM Terminals’ commitment to decarbonisation. The deal standardises equipment across its global network, embeds zero-emission technology, and moves procurement from a CapEx approach to an end-to-end lifecycle partnership. Key stakeholders—Olaf Gelhausen (COO, APM Terminals), Jeff Fu (CEO, SANY Marine), and Grant Morrison (Head of Global Asset Category Management)—attended the Zhuhai signing. The initiative also highlights the role of the Zero Emission Port Alliance in advancing cost-effective, electric port operations industry-wide.

(PRESS RELEASE) THE HAGUE, 11-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — APM Terminals and SANY Marine have formalized a Master Framework Agreement that paves the way for APM Terminals to transition its terminal tractor fleet to battery-electric models—an integral component of the company’s decarbonisation roadmap.

As outlined in the agreement, approximately 500 of the diesel-powered tractors currently in operation across APM Terminals’ worldwide network will be successively replaced with zero-emission electric units by 2030. This move aligns with a unified strategy to electrify terminal machinery and underscores APM Terminals’ resolve to cut carbon emissions in its port operations.

“APM Terminals is accelerating the decarbonisation of our operations through battery-electric equipment, renewable energy and energy efficiency,” stated Olaf Gelhausen, COO of APM Terminals. “This agreement demonstrates our commitment to taking action, not just talking. Standardising our equipment and scaling battery-electric solutions across our terminals is central to our strategy to reach net zero.”

Jeff Fu, CEO of SANY Marine, added, “Securing this partnership with APM Terminals is a milestone for SANY Marine and the industry. It is our largest global electric terminal truck order to date, and we are proud to support APM Terminals with comprehensive, low-carbon solutions that enable faster progress towards fully decarbonised terminal operations.”

The signing ceremony in Zhuhai, China, was attended by Grant Morrison, Head of Global Asset Category Management at APM Terminals, and Jeff Fu. Morrison reflected on the multi-year pact: “Building on the 2024 Strategic Supplier Council, this agreement exemplifies our goal of creating win-win partnerships. Moving from a traditional CapEx model to a full-cycle collaboration provides end-to-end support for operation, maintenance, and optimisation throughout the equipment’s lifespan.”

This collaboration also spotlights the Zero Emission Port Alliance, co-founded by APM Terminals in December 2023. “Over the last two years, we’ve witnessed major technological advancements and cost-effectiveness improvements in battery-electric equipment,” Gelhausen remarked. “This progress benefits the entire industry and makes our net zero ambition increasingly achievable. I’m encouraged by the momentum we’re building, both for APM Terminals and for the broader sector’s decarbonisation efforts.”
