ANDRITZ to Boost Pulp Production at SCA Östrand with Strategic Service Upgrades and SYNERGY Concept

(IN BRIEF) ANDRITZ has been awarded significant service contracts by SCA to enhance the performance of the Östrand pulp mill in northern Sweden. The collaboration includes replacing an economizer in the recovery boiler and deploying the SYNERGY Services concept across key processes such as white liquor treatment and pulp drying. The upgrades aim to boost equipment availability, process efficiency, and ultimately pulp production. SCA praised the robust design of the new economizer and the structured, strategic value of the SYNERGY approach. The partnership highlights the growing demand for tailored, long-term service strategies in the pulp and paper industry, blending process expertise with digital innovation.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 14-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — International technology group ANDRITZ has secured key service contracts from SCA, Europe’s largest private forest owner, aimed at boosting the performance and productivity of its Östrand pulp mill in northern Sweden.

The newly awarded agreements cover the replacement of an economizer within the recovery boiler system and the implementation of the SYNERGY Services concept across the mill’s white liquor plant and pulp drying processes. Together, these upgrades are designed to enhance equipment reliability and operational efficiency—critical factors in achieving the mill’s goal of increased pulp output.

Replacing heating surfaces such as economizers is a core area of service for ANDRITZ, leveraging its expertise in advanced boiler solutions. “We valued the robust design of the economizers and the professionalism demonstrated by the ANDRITZ team,” said Per Strand, Mill Manager at SCA Östrand. “Our trial of the SYNERGY concept showed it provides a structured, strategic approach that aligns well with our ambitions to optimize production.”

The SYNERGY Services concept from ANDRITZ integrates lifecycle management, automation, process expertise, and advanced digital technologies. By tailoring solutions to individual plant operations, the program enables sustained efficiency improvements and ensures higher availability of critical equipment over the long term.

“We focus on delivering custom solutions that contribute to our clients’ long-term success,” said Hannu Pyykönen, Director of SYNERGY Solutions at ANDRITZ. “By working in close partnership with SCA, we aim to further enhance the Östrand mill’s performance. Seeing how these initiatives positively impact daily operations reinforces our commitment to delivering value.”

As the pulp and paper industry increasingly moves toward smarter, more sustainable operations, long-term service partnerships like this one are becoming essential to driving operational excellence and future-proofing critical production assets.
