ANDRITZ Powers Sustainable Steel Production in Alabama with New Advanced Processing Line for ArcelorMittal

(IN BRIEF) ANDRITZ has received an order from ArcelorMittal Calvert to supply an advanced annealing and coating line and a cold rolling mill for a new electrical steel production facility in Calvert, Alabama. The facility, which will have the capacity to produce up to 150,000 tonnes of non-grain oriented electrical steel annually, is aimed at serving the automotive and industrial sectors with sustainable steel solutions. The S6-high cold rolling mill, a core element of the order, can process materials up to 1650 mm wide at speeds of up to 1000 m/min and adjust thicknesses between 0.2 and 0.5 mm, ensuring high-quality production. Additionally, the accompanying annealing and coating line, featuring an electrically heated furnace and optimized via a mathematical process model, is designed to enhance product quality while reducing energy consumption and eliminating greenhouse gas emissions. The comprehensive order includes complete mechanical and electrical systems along with installation supervision and commissioning services. This project strengthens the strategic partnership between ArcelorMittal and ANDRITZ and supports the development of a sustainable domestic supply chain for electrical steel.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 20-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — International technology powerhouse ANDRITZ has secured an order from ArcelorMittal Calvert to furnish a state-of-the-art annealing and coating line, along with a high-performance cold rolling mill, for its new, fully owned electrical steel production facility in Calvert, Alabama, USA. Although the order value remains undisclosed, the new facility is designed to produce up to 150,000 tonnes of non-grain oriented electrical steel (NOES) per annum, thereby supporting sustainable advancements in the automotive sector and various industrial applications.

ArcelorMittal North America’s CEO, John Brett, emphasized the critical need for a resilient and sustainable domestic supply chain for this vital material, a sentiment that underscores the strategic importance of the project. The ANDRITZ technology is engineered to optimize production efficiency, ensure superior strip flatness, and maintain an impeccable surface quality, thereby delivering electrical steel of the highest grade.

A highlight of the order is the S6-high cold rolling mill, capable of processing products up to 1650 mm wide at speeds reaching 1000 m/min, and reducing material thickness to between 0.2 and 0.5 mm. This advanced mill is supported by an integrated process model for heating, cooling, and rolling, which guarantees both optimized performance and cost-effective production. Complementing the rolling mill, the ultra-modern annealing and coating line transforms the cold-rolled strip into premium NOES. Notably, its electrically heated annealing furnace circumvents greenhouse gas emissions typically generated by fossil fuels, while its mathematical model streamlines both material quality and energy consumption.

The contract also encompasses the design and supply of all necessary mechanical and electrical components, as well as the supervision of installation and commissioning. “We are very pleased to have been selected by ArcelorMittal for this important project that contributes to the shift towards sustainable mobility. We are committed to supporting our customers in driving the green transition,” stated Joachim Schönbeck, CEO of ANDRITZ.

This order not only reinforces the enduring partnership between ArcelorMittal and ANDRITZ but also paves the way for cutting-edge production capabilities that align with global sustainability goals.
