AFRY Secures Key Design Contract for Control Circuit Reconstruction at Paks Nuclear Power Plant, Hungary

(IN BRIEF) AFRY has been awarded a significant design contract by MVM NUKA for the reconstruction of control circuits at Hungary’s MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant as part of its lifetime extension programme. The project involves the design of nearly 700 control circuits, ensuring safe and reliable operations while adhering to international safety standards. The Paks NPP is essential to Hungary’s clean energy goals, and AFRY’s continued partnership with MVM NUKA reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the country’s energy infrastructure and the global transition to secure, sustainable energy.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 22-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY has secured a vital design contract from MVM NUKA to assist in the reconstruction of control circuits at Hungary’s MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). This project forms a key part of the plant’s lifetime extension programme, a critical initiative aimed at ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of one of Hungary’s primary energy sources.

The contract, awarded to AFRY by MVM NUKA Ltd., the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contractor, will involve the detailed design of nearly 700 control circuits. These circuits will include both instrumentation and control systems, as well as electrical systems, though the reactor and turbine islands will not be included in this scope. Throughout the process, AFRY’s work will adhere to stringent safety and design standards, following guidelines set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, and the Paks Nuclear Power Plant itself.

József Dénes, Head of Nuclear and Managing Director at AFRY Hungary, expressed the company’s pride in continuing its partnership with MVM NUKA and MVM Paks NPP: “This contract is a testament to our ability to execute high-stakes, complex projects in the nuclear sector. Our ongoing collaboration with MVM NUKA further underscores our commitment to supporting the safe and reliable operation of Hungary’s energy infrastructure.”

The Paks NPP is an essential part of Hungary’s energy landscape, generating almost 40% of the nation’s electricity. It is integral to the country’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions and currently supplies clean energy to around 1.5 million households. AFRY’s role in the Paks NPP project aligns with its dedication to advancing a secure and efficient energy transition.

With over 75 years of experience in power plant design in Hungary, AFRY has been a trusted partner to the Paks NPP for nearly four decades. The company’s expertise in plant design and rehabilitation has been instrumental in supporting the ongoing modernization of Hungary’s energy infrastructure. AFRY’s contributions in asset lifetime extension are key to ensuring the long-term reliability of these critical facilities.
