(IN BRIEF) Webuild, through subsidiary Lane, has finished the new Unionport Bridge spanning Westchester Creek in the Bronx. The $232 million project replaces a 1950s structure and connects key transport corridors, including the Cross Bronx Expressway, Bruckner Expressway and Hutchinson River Parkway. The modern bridge features two single-leaf bascule spans with three lanes each, plus a protected bike lane and pedestrian walkway supporting Vision Zero initiatives. With advanced lifting systems for maritime access, improved lighting and safety integrations, the bridge was constructed in phases to maintain uninterrupted road and waterway traffic. Completion strengthens Webuild’s U.S. footprint and adds to its global bridge portfolio exceeding 1,000 km.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 9-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Webuild, through its U.S. subsidiary Lane, has completed the construction of the new Unionport Bridge in the Bronx, New York, delivering a modern replacement to the original 1950s bascule bridge and strengthening one of the city’s most strategic mobility links. The $232-million project spans Westchester Creek along the Bruckner Expressway corridor and is expected to serve tens of thousands of daily commuters, while also maintaining navigational access for maritime traffic.

The bridge connects major roadway arteries — including the Cross Bronx Expressway, Bruckner Expressway and Hutchinson River Parkway — improving traffic efficiency, safety and neighborhood connectivity across the borough. Designed for a 75-year service life, the new structure features two parallel single-leaf bascule spans, each with three traffic lanes. It also includes a separate pedestrian walkway and a protected cycling lane, reinforcing New York City’s Vision Zero and sustainable mobility goals.

Equipped with advanced mechanical and electrical lift systems, the bridge can open rapidly to allow vessels to pass, while upgraded lighting, signage and safety technology improve visibility and the commuter experience.

Construction executed in phases to keep New York moving

To avoid interrupting daily activity, the project was delivered using a phased construction strategy that maintained both roadway operation and marine passage throughout the build. Lane coordinated marine, structural and traffic-management activities alongside partner Schiavone Construction Co. LLC (now SPC Construction Co. LLC), meeting the New York City Department of Transportation’s expectations for safety, durability and minimal community disruption.
