Energiekontor sells repowered Würselen wind park to SachsenEnergie, boosting renewable capacity in North Rhine-Westphalia

(IN BRIEF) Energiekontor AG has sold the repowered Würselen wind park in North Rhine-Westphalia to SachsenEnergie NaturKraft GmbH, a subsidiary of Dresden-based SachsenEnergie AG. The project, located on a former coalfield, replaced three older 1.5 MW turbines with three Vestas V150 turbines of 6 MW each, delivering a total capacity of 18 MW. With an expected annual yield of 41 million kWh, the park can power over 12,500 households while cutting around 31,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. Energiekontor will continue to provide operational management support. Both companies view the transaction as a step toward expanding renewable energy capacities and strengthening cooperation, with Energiekontor emphasizing the importance of repowering and SachsenEnergie highlighting its ambition to grow its green generation portfolio.

(PRESS RELEASE) BREMEN, 30-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Energiekontor AG, the Bremen-based project developer and operator of wind and solar parks, has successfully completed the sale of the Würselen wind park in North Rhine-Westphalia to Dresden’s energy supplier SachsenEnergie. The project, which entered operation in May 2025, is a repowered facility replacing older turbines with new high-performance models and demonstrates the role of repowering in Germany’s renewable energy expansion.

The Würselen site, located on the grounds of the former Aachen coalfield, was originally built by Energiekontor more than 20 years ago. The company has now replaced the previous three GE turbines (1.5 MW each) with three new Vestas V150 turbines, each offering 6.0 MW of output. With a hub height of 125 meters and a rotor diameter of 150 meters, the turbines are expected to deliver around 41 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually, supplying more than 12,500 German households and reducing carbon emissions by roughly 31,000 tonnes per year.

The 18 MW wind park benefits from an EEG feed-in tariff granted by the Federal Network Agency. While ownership has been transferred to SachsenEnergie NaturKraft GmbH, Energiekontor will continue to support the project through its expertise in operational management and optimization.

Peter Szabo, CEO of Energiekontor AG, emphasized the broader importance of repowering: “Replacing older turbines with modern, more powerful models not only boosts electricity output but also reduces impacts on people and nature, securing the future viability of wind parks. With this transaction, our first collaboration with SachsenEnergie, we are sending a strong message in support of renewable energy expansion. We look forward to further opportunities for cooperation.” He noted that Energiekontor has already sold five projects with a combined 115 MW of capacity this financial year, with additional projects in advanced negotiations.

For SachsenEnergie, the acquisition strengthens its renewable generation portfolio. CEO Dr. Frank Brinkmann highlighted the strategic significance: “The Würselen wind park expands our geographic footprint and diversifies our wind portfolio while advancing our commitment to clean energy.” Jens-Patric Hirtz, Head of the NaturKraft business unit, added: “We are open to partnerships that support our growth, but at the same time, we remain committed to pursuing our own projects in Saxony and beyond.”

The transaction highlights how regional utilities and experienced developers can work together to accelerate Germany’s renewable energy transition.

Founded in Bremerhaven, Germany, in 1990, the company is among the pioneers in its industry and is now one of Germany’s leading project developers. Its core business ranges from the planning and construction to the operational management of wind and solar parks in Germany and abroad. In addition, Energiekontor operates 40 wind and solar parks with a total nominal power of around 450 megawatts in its own portfolio. Around 200 megawatts, which are also earmarked for the Group’s own portfolio, are currently under construction. Energiekontor also plays a pioneering role in economic terms and aims to realise the first wind and solar parks in all target markets at market prices as quickly as possible, independently of state subsidies.

Along with its headquarters in Bremen, Germany, Energiekontor has offices in Bremerhaven, Hagen im Bremischen, Aachen, Augsburg, Berlin, Potsdam and Hildesheim. The company also has branch offices in England, Scotland, Portugal, France and the United States.

Since being established, Energiekontor has a proud track record of realising more than 170 wind and solar park projects with a total nominal power of over 1.5 gigawatts. This corresponds to an investment volume of more than 2.3 billion euros. The significantly expanded project pipeline in the 2024 financial year (11.2 gigawatts excluding US project rights) shows the future growth potential and the possible contribution that Energiekontor can make to the expansion of renewable energies.

Energiekontor AG (WKN 531350/ISIN DE0005313506/General Standard) is listed on the SDAX of the German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt. Shares can be traded on all German stock markets.
