Continental WinterContact TS 870 P Wins Double ‘Exemplary’ Rating in AUTO BILD Winter Tire Tests

(IN BRIEF) Continental’s WinterContact TS 870 P tire has earned the highest rating of “exemplary” in two separate winter tire tests conducted by AUTO BILD Allrad and AUTO BILD sportscars. The tire was praised for its excellent performance on snow-covered, wet, and dry roads, with strong safety features, including exceptional braking distance and low rolling resistance. It is designed for a wide range of vehicles, from midsize passenger cars to SUVs, and offers precise handling and safety across typical winter road conditions.

(PRESS RELEASE) HANOVER, 11-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Continental’s WinterContact TS 870 P tire has been awarded the top rating of “exemplary” by two respected German motoring magazines, AUTO BILD Allrad and AUTO BILD sportscars, following their latest winter tire tests. The accolades highlight the tire’s exceptional performance in both safety and handling across various winter conditions.

The tire was tested on two different vehicles: a 245/45 R 18 version on an all-wheel-drive Cupra Formentor and a 235/35 R 19 version on an all-wheel-drive BMW M135i. Both publications praised the WinterContact TS 870 P for its outstanding capabilities on snow-covered, wet, and dry roads. AUTO BILD Allrad described it as a “top-class tire” with impressive driving dynamics, excellent performance in snow and wet conditions, and strong aquaplaning resistance, along with low rolling resistance. AUTO BILD sportscars similarly commended the tire, calling it “a very convincing winter tire” with remarkable snow handling and safety on wet and dry surfaces.

In test results, the Continental tire consistently earned scores between 1- and 2 across various performance metrics, underscoring its well-balanced attributes. One standout feature noted by AUTO BILD Allrad was the tire’s braking performance on wet surfaces. In a test simulating an 80 km/h (50 mph) stop, the WinterContact TS 870 P came to a halt 11 meters sooner than the worst-performing tire, a difference roughly equivalent to the length of two-and-a-half small cars. This shorter braking distance provides a critical safety advantage, particularly in the typical winter conditions of Central Europe, where snow, rain, and cold wet roads are prevalent.

In addition to its strong safety performance, the tire’s low rolling resistance was also a key factor in its high marks. Lower rolling resistance not only improves fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions for gasoline and diesel vehicles but also extends the range of electric vehicles, offering significant savings for drivers across the board.

The Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is designed for passenger cars from the midsize class and up, including SUVs. It delivers reliable, precise handling in winter road conditions, and its performance extends to dry and wet surfaces. The tire is available in sizes ranging from 16 to 22 inches, with widths between 205 and 325 millimeters, and aspect ratios from 70 to 35 percent. Depending on the size, the tire has a speed rating of up to 270 km/h (168 mph).
