The Ox Apartment Complex in Amsterdam New West Officially Handed Over to Residents

(IN BRIEF) On February 1st, the newly constructed Ox apartment complex in the Osdorp district of Amsterdam New West was officially handed over to its first tenant, attended by representatives from Vesteda and developer Van Wijnen, along with Alderman Reinier Van Dantzig. This sustainable and energy-efficient building comprises 168 rental apartments, with 134 in the mid-rental segment and 34 in the liberalized sector. Vesteda prioritized residents from Amsterdam New West and those vacating social rental homes during the allocation process, aiming to increase housing market mobility. Additionally, they gave preference to individuals in key social professions, such as healthcare, education, police, and the fire brigade, allocating nearly 100 percent of mid-rental homes to priority candidates, including friends and colleagues looking to share housing costs. Alderman Reinier Van Dantzig praised the effort to address the city’s housing needs and create opportunities for various groups, while Rene Tim of Vesteda highlighted the social role of the development. The Ox’s rental process began in November 2023, with the first residents moving in during February 2024.

(PRESS RELEASE) AMSTERDAM, 3-Feb-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — 1 February saw the official handover of The Ox apartment complex in the Osdorp district of Amsterdam New West. In addition to representatives from Vesteda and construction firm and developer Van Wijnen, alderman Reinier Van Dantzig was present to hand over the key to the first tenant of this complex. The newly built complex consists of 168 rental apartments, 134 of which are in the mid-rental segment and 34 in the liberalised sector. The Ox is a sustainable and energy-efficient building.

Active contribution to mobility

When allocating the apartments, Vesteda gave priority to residents from Amsterdam New West and to tenants who were leaving a social rental home behind. As a result, their homes were once again available to first-time renters and people with lower incomes. By doing this, Vesteda made an active contribution to mobility on the Amsterdam housing market.

Other priority schemes

In addition, in the allocation of the apartments Vesteda gave priority to people in key social professions, such as employees in healthcare, education, the police force and the fire brigade. A third of the new tenants work in one of these sectors. Furthermore, friends and colleagues were able to sign up for so-called ‘Friends’ apartments, enabling these singles to share housing costs. All in all, Vesteda allocated almost 100 percent of the mid-rental homes to priority candidates.

Alderman Reinier Van Dantzig: “These new homes are badly needed by Amsterdam residents who are waiting for a new home. It is especially important that we were able to create extra opportunities for residents from Amsterdam New West, for police officers, teachers and healthcare workers and for people leaving behind social housing. This also makes the complex an improvement for the neighbourhood and I wish all residents a lot of enjoyment in their new homes.”

Rene Tim, Head of Acquisitions & Development at Vesteda: “We are proud of the completion of The Ox, a beautiful residential building that gives a boost to the transformation of Amsterdam New West. With The Ox, we are offering affordable and high-quality rental homes to people who are indispensable to the city, such as teachers, nurses and police officers. We want them to be able to (continue to) live and work in their own city. We are also contributing to mobility on the housing market and diversity in the neighbourhood. The Ox is a perfect example of how we fulfil our social role as a residential investor.”

Frank Klomp, Project Development Director at Van Wijnen: “As Van Wijnen, we are proud to be giving such a wonderful asset to Vesteda and the city of Amsterdam with the development and realisation of this beautiful project.”

The Ox was developed by Van Wijnen Projectontwikkeling Midden B.V. and built by Van Wijnen Amsterdam B.V. The design is by LEVS architects. The rental of the apartments started in November 2023 and has now been completed. The first residents will move into their new homes in February 2024.
