(PRESS RELEASE) WOLFSBURG, 22-Jun-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Volkswagen has introduced an advanced AI tool, ChatGPT, into its latest vehicle models, marking a significant leap in automotive technology integration. This innovation, part of Volkswagen’s broader strategy to democratize cutting-edge technologies, enhances the capabilities of their IDA online voice assistant. By seamlessly integrating ChatGPT, Volkswagen enables drivers to interact with their vehicles using natural language, expanding beyond traditional voice commands.

Available in all new ID. models and selected vehicles like the Golf, Tiguan, and Passat, ChatGPT provides users with a wide array of functionalities. Drivers can now receive spoken search results, obtain information on diverse topics such as tourist attractions or sports events, and even receive help with tasks like solving mathematical problems – all through intuitive voice interactions, ensuring minimal distraction from driving.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Development at Volkswagen, highlighted the company’s commitment to making advanced technologies accessible to a broader audience. This move underscores Volkswagen’s dedication to innovation and user-centric design, enhancing the everyday driving experience for their customers.

The integration of ChatGPT into Volkswagen’s infotainment system is facilitated by technology partner Cerence Inc., leveraging their expertise in automotive AI solutions. This collaboration underscores Volkswagen’s leadership in adopting AI to enhance vehicle functionalities while ensuring robust data protection measures. Users can activate the IDA assistant simply by saying “Hello IDA” or using a steering wheel button, ensuring a seamless and secure interaction experience.

This integration of ChatGPT into Volkswagen vehicles represents a significant step forward in automotive AI, demonstrating Volkswagen’s commitment to delivering state-of-the-art technologies that enrich the driving experience while prioritizing user safety and data privacy.

Easy to use, no additional account necessary. Volkswagen customers with an existing account for VW Connect/VW Connect Plus can use the IDA voice assistant as usual – they do not require additional access or an additional app. The digital assistant is launched by saying “Hello IDA” or pressing the button on the steering wheel. Only if a query cannot be answered by the Volkswagen system is it forwarded anonymously to ChatGPT; the answer is then provided in the familiar Volkswagen voice. At no point does ChatGPT gain access to vehicle data. Questions and answers are deleted immediately in order to ensure optimal data protection. The online voice assistant can be deactivated either in the settings area of the Volkswagen app or in the infotainment system’s privacy settings.

Technology available in five languages. In January 2024, Volkswagen presented the first vehicles with ChatGPT integrated into the IDA voice assistant at the CES 2024, a trade show for electronics. The technology is currently available in the system languages English (US), English (UK), Spanish, Czech and German. Its use in Volkswagen vehicles has been made possible thanks to a collaboration with Cerence Inc., the global leader in automotive AI solutions, and its Cerence Chat Pro, which uses a variety of sources – including ChatGPT – to enable IDA to provide accurate and relevant responses to nearly every query imaginable.
