Vattenfall Wins UK Contracts to Boost Renewable Energy with 100 MW Wind and Solar Projects

Vattenfall Wins UK Contracts to Boost Renewable Energy with 100 MW Wind and Solar Projects

(IN BRIEF) On September 4, 2024, Vattenfall announced it has secured Contracts for Difference (CfD) for two significant renewable energy projects in the UK. The Clashindarroch II onshore wind farm and the Kemberton solar farm will collectively add 100 MW of clean energy capacity, sufficient to power approximately 60,000 homes. The CfDs guarantee fixed prices for the electricity produced by these projects, supporting the UK’s transition to renewable energy and helping meet its net-zero targets. The Clashindarroch II wind farm will feature 14 turbines and is expected to save over 70,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, while the Kemberton solar farm will cover 20 hectares and reduce CO2 emissions by around 5,280 tonnes per year.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 5-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a significant boost to the UK’s renewable energy landscape, the UK government has awarded Contracts for Difference (CfD) to two major green energy projects: the Clashindarroch II onshore wind farm and the Kemberton solar farm. These projects, spearheaded by Vattenfall, will collectively add 100 MW of new renewable energy capacity, powering approximately 60,000 British homes with clean, sustainable electricity.

The CfDs, granted in the latest allocation round, underscore the UK’s commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels and advancing its net-zero targets. The Clashindarroch II wind farm, located near Huntly in Aberdeenshire, and the Kemberton solar farm, situated near Telford in Shropshire, will play pivotal roles in this green energy push.

Vattenfall’s Ambitious Green Energy Goals

Frank Elsworth, Head of UK Onshore Development at Vattenfall, expressed enthusiasm about the new projects: “These CfD awards mark a major milestone in our mission to support the UK’s climate goals. The Clashindarroch II wind farm and Kemberton solar farm will not only provide clean, renewable energy but also create local jobs and stimulate economic growth in their respective regions.”

Project Details

  • Clashindarroch II Wind Farm: This 77 MW project will feature 14 turbines with a tip height of 180 meters. It is expected to supply power to over 55,000 households annually, reducing carbon emissions by more than 70,000 tonnes per year.
  • Kemberton Solar Farm: With a capacity of 22 MW, this solar array will cover approximately 20 hectares and is projected to meet the energy needs of up to 6,000 homes, cutting down CO2 emissions by around 5,280 tonnes annually.

Contracts for Difference Scheme

The Contracts for Difference scheme is a cornerstone of the UK’s strategy to support low-carbon electricity generation. It guarantees a fixed price for the electricity produced, ensuring long-term stability and investment in green energy infrastructure. Vattenfall has been awarded a CfD at £50.90/MWh for the Clashindarroch II project and £50.07/MWh for the Kemberton solar farm.

Future Prospects

These new projects highlight Vattenfall’s ongoing dedication to enhancing the UK’s energy security and reducing energy bills through rapid deployment of onshore wind and solar technologies. They also promise significant community and supply chain benefits, reinforcing the company’s role in advancing sustainable energy solutions across the UK.
