TotalEnergies Embarks on Pioneering Floating Wind Turbine Project to Power North Sea Oil & Gas Platform

(IN BRIEF) TotalEnergies has launched a pilot project to install a 3 MW floating wind turbine in the UK North Sea, designed to supply renewable energy to the Culzean offshore oil and gas platform. This innovative project aims to provide around 20% of the platform’s power needs, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. The turbine will be operational by the end of 2025 and will be installed on a modular floater hull designed by Ocergy. The project is part of Crown Estate Scotland’s initiative to promote the use of offshore wind energy for oil and gas platforms.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 29-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — TotalEnergies has announced the launch of a groundbreaking pilot project in the UK North Sea, where it will deploy a floating wind turbine to provide renewable energy to the Culzean offshore oil and gas platform. Located 220 km off the eastern coast of Scotland, the 3 MW floating turbine is expected to meet around 20% of the platform’s power needs, significantly reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. This innovative project, slated to be fully operational by the end of 2025, represents a major step towards the decarbonization of offshore energy production.

The turbine will be installed on a modular, semi-submersible floater hull designed by Ocergy, which is expected to optimize both assembly time and costs. This project aims to demonstrate the viability of hybrid power generation on offshore platforms by integrating renewable electricity from the floating wind turbine with existing gas turbine power generation.

Marie-Noelle Semeria, Chief Technology Officer at TotalEnergies, highlighted the project’s dual focus: “This pilot not only seeks to validate the integration of renewable energy with conventional power systems on offshore platforms but also to qualify a promising new floater design for the future of floating wind energy.”

Selected as part of Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) leasing round, this project underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions while advancing the development of renewable energy technologies.
