Sweco Enhances Expertise in Smart Building Technologies with Acquisition of Brain of buildings

This acquisition adds 30 consultants and engineers to Sweco’s Netherlands team, reinforcing its capabilities in the growing sector of smart building technologies. Brain of buildings specializes in security, fire safety, electrical, and mechanical engineering, focusing on sustainability. The acquisition is expected to contribute EUR 5.2 million in turnover by 2025 and strengthens Sweco’s position in the European market as a top architecture and engineering consultancy.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 5-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Sweco has signed a deal to acquire Brain of buildings, a Dutch engineering firm specializing in the integration of cutting-edge technology solutions for safe and intelligent buildings. This acquisition will increase Sweco’s workforce in the Netherlands by adding 30 new consultants and engineers, complementing the existing team of 2,200 professionals. The move strengthens Sweco’s position in the growing field of smart building technologies.

Brain of buildings delivers innovative solutions in areas such as security, fire safety, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering, blending technology with sustainability to enhance building performance and safety. Founded in 2004 in Eersel, North Brabant, the company has gained recognition with several prestigious awards, including being named the Smartest Company in the Netherlands.

Brain of buildings is expected to generate around EUR 5.2 million in turnover by 2025, while Sweco Netherlands recorded a turnover of EUR 283.4 million in 2024. The acquisition will take effect immediately.

This acquisition aligns with Sweco’s strategy to expand its capabilities by incorporating specialized skills into its team of 22,000 experts. It will further cement the company’s role as a leader in architecture and engineering consultancy across Europe.

Sweco has also recently broadened its presence in the Netherlands with additional acquisitions, including a consultancy specializing in civil engineering, mobility, and urban planning, an engineering firm with 60 specialists, and a renowned environmental consultancy with 200 professionals.
