SUEZ renews €33 million contract to transform Mureaux wastewater treatment plant into a model of ecological transition for the Île-de-France region

(IN BRIEF) SUEZ has renewed its €33 million, eight-year contract with the Grand Paris Seine & Oise Urban Community to manage wastewater treatment for 24 municipalities in Yvelines. The Mureaux plant, already the first in Île-de-France to inject biomethane into the gas network, will undergo major upgrades to boost energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and integrate solar power. Key investments include a digital twin system, modernization of sludge treatment, and community outreach initiatives. With these measures, the site aims for energy neutrality by 2033, reaffirming SUEZ’s role in driving sustainable water management and ecological innovation in the region.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 8-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — SUEZ has been awarded an eight-year contract worth €33 million by the Grand Paris Seine & Oise Urban Community (CU GPS&O) to continue operating wastewater treatment services for 24 municipalities in the Yvelines department. The renewed partnership will see the Mureaux wastewater treatment plant evolve into a flagship site for sustainable water management and energy transition in the Île-de-France region, while deepening its engagement with local communities.

With a treatment capacity of 20,600 m³ per day, equivalent to the needs of 120,500 inhabitants, the Mureaux plant already holds a pioneering role in the region. In December 2019, it became the first wastewater treatment plant in Île-de-France to inject biomethane into the local gas grid — producing around 4 GWh per year, enough to supply heating and hot water for approximately 800 homes.

Under this renewed contract, SUEZ will invest €2.8 million (excluding taxes) to enhance the site’s operational efficiency, expand its renewable energy output, and strengthen its contribution to the region’s energy neutrality goals by 2033, in line with the European Directive 2024/3019.

Investments driving sustainable innovation

By 2026, the installation of a photovoltaic solar plant will supply the site’s own operational energy needs, avoiding an estimated 25 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. Meanwhile, modernization of the sludge treatment system, including the renovation of two filter presses, will enhance sludge quality and support energy recovery and composting processes.

The plant will also adopt cutting-edge digital technologies to optimize performance. A digital twin, or virtual model of the facility, will allow real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance, expected to cut energy consumption by 7% (roughly 60 MWh annually) and reduce the use of ferric chloride by 15%. Complementing this, SUEZ’s AQUADVANCED® Urban Drainage solution will enable intelligent management of wastewater inflow and precise control of treated water discharged into the Seine River.

Community engagement and education

Beyond its technical advancements, the Mureaux plant will strengthen its role as a local educational hub, offering guided visits and a new educational center to raise awareness among schoolchildren and residents about water conservation and the circular economy. The project also incorporates strong social inclusion commitments, including partnerships with at least 10 local SMEs, collaborations with SeinergyLab, ValServices, and Mur’Envol, and the creation of 120 hours of professional integration opportunities per year.

Arnaud Bazire, Executive Vice President, Water France at SUEZ, commented:

“We are proud to support the Grand Paris Seine & Oise urban community in transforming the Mureaux wastewater treatment plant. Already a pioneer in biomethane production, the site is now taking a major step toward energy neutrality. Through improved performance, digital innovation, and renewable energy, Mureaux will continue to play a central role in the ecological transition of the Île-de-France region.”
