(IN BRIEF) Alstom has secured a significant new order to supply 27 new-generation Citadis trams to the Eurométropole de Strasbourg and the Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois (CTS) under an eight-year framework agreement valued at up to 250 million euros. This order, which builds on an initial 2023 contract for 12 trams, will see deliveries commencing in spring 2025, as the new vehicles gradually replace the older Eurotrams. Designed for optimal passenger comfort and operational efficiency, these 45-meter-long trams feature multiple wide double doors, full low-floor access, enhanced lighting, and integrated systems for both passenger information and safety. Engineered to reduce energy consumption by 25%, they employ advanced engine technologies, climate control systems, and 100% LED lighting, while eco-design principles ensure that 95% of the vehicle is recyclable and 98% is reusable. Additionally, a streamlined maintenance design is expected to lower preventive maintenance operations by 16% over a 30-year service life. The production of these state-of-the-art trams involves collaboration across ten of Alstom’s French manufacturing sites, reinforcing the company’s leadership in sustainable, innovative urban mobility solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 19-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom, a global frontrunner in smart and sustainable mobility, is proud to announce a new phase in Strasbourg’s public transportation evolution. As part of an eight-year framework agreement signed in April 2023 with the Eurométropole de Strasbourg and the Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois (CTS), Alstom will deliver 27 cutting-edge Citadis trams, further modernizing the fleet and gradually phasing out aging Eurotrams. With this new order, Strasbourg’s tram fleet will be enhanced by 39 new-generation Citadis trams, reinforcing the city’s commitment to innovative, eco-friendly transit solutions.

The deal, valued at up to 250 million euros, builds on an initial order of 12 trams placed in 2023, with deliveries set to begin in spring 2025. This expansion underscores the renewed confidence of both the Eurométropole de Strasbourg and CTS in Alstom’s pioneering design and engineering capabilities. “We are delighted with this additional order for our new-generation Citadis trams. It is a testament to our partners’ trust in our ability to deliver sustainable and innovative mobility solutions for Strasbourg,” said Frédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France.

Engineered with passenger comfort and operational efficiency in mind, the 45-meter-long, 2.40-meter-wide trams feature eight double doors on each side, each measuring 1.30 meters, to facilitate rapid boarding and disembarkation. Designed to comply with People with Reduced Mobility (PRM) regulations, the trams offer full low-floor access, door-opening buttons positioned at an optimal height, and dedicated spaces for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Additional amenities include signature lighting for clear visibility of door operations, loudspeakers and acoustic signals for passengers with visual and hearing impairments, comprehensive air conditioning, a dynamic passenger information system, and an integrated video protection system—all contributing to a safer and more pleasant journey.

The new Citadis trams are not only designed for passenger comfort but are also energy-efficient, reducing energy consumption by 25% compared with the current rolling stock. This efficiency is achieved through advanced engine technology, optimal climate control management, and the exclusive use of 100% LED lighting. In line with eco-design principles, these trams are 95% recyclable and 98% reusable, while also promising a 16% reduction in preventive maintenance operations over their expected 30-year service life. Maintenance has been streamlined by reducing spare part variants and improving component accessibility.

Manufactured and assembled in France, these Citadis trams benefit from the expertise of ten Alstom sites across the country. Key facilities include La Rochelle for design and assembly; Le Creusot for bogies; Ornans for engines; Villeurbanne for on-board electronics and cyber security; Aix-en-Provence for tacho centres; Tarbes for electrical equipment; Alstom IBRE in Sens for brake discs; Alstom Flertex in Gennevilliers and Saint-Florentin for brake linings; Valenciennes for spare parts; and Saint-Ouen for design and after-sales support. With over 3,000 Citadis trams ordered in 70 cities across 20 countries, accumulating more than 1 billion kilometres traveled and 10 billion passengers served since their debut in 2000, the Citadis range continues to set the benchmark in modern urban mobility.
