Stadler to Supply Ten More FLIRT Akku Battery Trains to Strengthen Lokaltog’s Green Rail Fleet in Eastern Denmark

(IN BRIEF) Stadler has secured an order from Lokaltog A/S for ten more FLIRT Akku battery-powered trains, following an option in their 2024 contract. Entering service in 2029, the new units will replace Denmark’s aging IC2 trains and strengthen zero-emission rail travel in Eastern Denmark. The FLIRT Akku can travel 100 kilometers on battery power, recharge through overhead lines or regenerative braking, and holds a Guinness World Record for covering 224 kilometers without recharging. Built at Stadler’s Polska plant in Siedlce, the trains meet European TSI PRM accessibility standards and feature low-floor boarding, wide doors, gap bridges, wheelchair and bicycle spaces, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, passenger information screens, and a universal toilet. This expansion will bring Lokaltog’s total FLIRT Akku fleet to 24 units, reinforcing its commitment to safe, sustainable, and passenger-focused transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUSSNANG, 13-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadler has received an order from Lokaltog A/S for ten additional battery-powered FLIRT Akku trains, exercising an option from the contract signed in October 2024. This latest purchase reinforces Lokaltog’s mission to deliver emission-free rail services across Eastern Denmark. Scheduled for introduction in 2029, the new units will join the operator’s modern fleet, boosting both sustainability and service capacity on its network.

Lars Wrist-Elkjær, CEO of Lokaltog, praised Region Zealand’s decision to support the expansion of the battery train fleet. “The battery trains are of great importance to Lokaltog’s contribution to the green transition, and at the same time we can ensure stronger robustness in our operations,” he said.

The FLIRT Akku can travel up to 100 kilometers on battery power alone and recharge automatically via overhead lines or through regenerative braking. In 2021, a FLIRT Akku set a Guinness World Record by covering 224 kilometers on a single charge without recharging. Stadler holds a 50% market share in Europe’s battery-powered train sector and also offers hydrogen and hybrid propulsion systems tailored to different operational needs.

“With this additional order, we will deliver a total of 24 advanced, emission-free FLIRT Akku units—a proven solution that provides zero-emission operations while maintaining reliability and passenger comfort,” said Radosław Banach, CEO of Stadler’s Polska plant in Siedlce, where the trains will be built. “We are proud to continue our partnership with Lokaltog and to support their efforts toward sustainable, future-ready mobility.”

Designed to meet European TSI PRM standards, the FLIRT Akku features low-floor entry, wide doors, and automatic gap bridges for easy boarding from low platforms. Onboard amenities include dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles, a semi-automatic boarding ramp for wheelchair users, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, modern passenger information displays, and a universally accessible toilet.

The ten new trains will replace the IC2 fleet, which has been in service in Denmark since 1997, on regional routes in Region Zealand. This investment further cements Lokaltog’s role in offering safe, accessible, and environmentally responsible transport for passengers.
