(IN BRIEF) Stadler has secured a contract with A-Train AB to supply seven FLIRT trains for the Arlanda Express route, which will run between Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station starting in late 2029. The contract, valued at approximately 350 million Swiss francs, includes a 15-year maintenance agreement and marks the first major step in replacing the current fleet. The new FLIRT trains will significantly enhance capacity, increase seating by over 50%, and provide improved comfort and convenience for passengers. Designed specifically for the Nordic climate, these trains will feature modern, comfortable interiors and high-performance capabilities, including a top speed of 200 km/h.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUSSNANG, 19-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadler has received an order from A-Train AB, the operator of the Arlanda Express in Sweden, to supply seven state-of-the-art FLIRT trains, with an option for an eighth. These trains will operate between Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station, beginning at the end of 2029. The contract also includes a comprehensive 15-year maintenance agreement. The order, valued at approximately 350 million Swiss francs, marks a significant milestone in the continued partnership between Stadler and A-Train AB.

The FLIRT trains, known for their high comfort levels, are designed to meet the specific needs of the Nordic region and will increase seating capacity by more than 50%. With a length of 165 meters, these trains will offer 323 seats, nearly double the capacity of the current fleet, and will be equipped with features such as wheelchair spaces, large luggage areas, and visible customer service counters. The trains are designed for high performance, with a top speed of 200 km/h and excellent tractive effort, ensuring fast and reliable connections.

The customization of the FLIRT trains extends to the interior design, which reflects the Nordic style of the A-Train Lounge at Stockholm Central Station. The design focuses on bright, open spaces, comfortable seating, and modern furnishings to create a superior travel experience. Various seating options, including lounge sofa seats for group travelers and quiet signature seating areas, will further enhance passenger comfort.

Wacker will produce the trains at their site in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, starting in late 2026, while Stadler will be responsible for the commercialization and ongoing management of the project. The partnership between Stadler and A-Train AB also includes a significant focus on customer service, with the new trains set to replace the existing fleet, which has been in operation since 1999.

Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Stadler, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership: “This order underscores the adaptability and flexibility of our FLIRT trains, which can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements in both technology and design. We are honored that A-Train AB has chosen us to supply vehicles for the prestigious Arlanda Express line, and we look forward to maintaining these trains for 15 years.”

Magnus Zetterberg, CEO of A-Train AB, commented: “This investment will enable us to continue providing top-class service to our passengers with modern, quiet, and punctual trains. The increased capacity will allow us to welcome even more passengers, especially leisure travelers. We’re excited to work with Stadler to redefine the travel experience to and from the airport.”

The new FLIRT trains will replace the aging fleet, which will reach the end of its service life by 2029, just in time for the new trains to begin service.
