(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 20-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Skanska has secured a USD 249 million (approximately SEK 2.5 billion) contract with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to deliver a major upgrade on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York, USA. The project, awarded in July 2025, focuses on the design and installation of a comprehensive main cable dehumidification system across all four bridge cables, as well as the integration of advanced acoustic monitoring technology.

As part of the agreement, Skanska will also provide associated electrical and communication systems, along with ongoing maintenance and monitoring of the new systems for five years following commissioning and acceptance. The project scope extends further to include facilitating internal inspections of the main cable panels, replacing all cable band bolts, installing new main cable aerial obstruction lights and supports, and upgrading messenger cables, hand ropes, and stanchions.

These enhancements are designed to improve the long-term durability, functionality, and safety of one of New York’s most iconic bridges, which serves as a vital transportation link between Staten Island and Brooklyn. Completion of the works is expected by September 2029.

The project will be recorded in Skanska’s US order bookings for the third quarter of 2025, reinforcing the company’s strong presence in the North American infrastructure market.
