Siemens Mobility to fully automate Paris Metro Line 13 with CBTC GoA4 by 2032

Siemens Mobility to fully automate Paris Metro Line 13 with CBTC GoA4 by 2032

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Mobility has secured a contract from RATP to deliver its CBTC GoA4 driverless automation system for Paris Metro Line 13, one of the city’s busiest routes. The project, backed by Île-de-France Mobilités, will include a new operations control center, equipment for 66 trains, and an optional 30-year maintenance deal. Full automation is planned by 2032, beginning with new trains in 2027. The system will improve service capacity, reliability, energy efficiency, and passenger information. Siemens Mobility’s Châtillon-based engineering hub will lead the project, building on successful automation of Lines 1, 4, and 14.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 27-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens Mobility has been awarded a major contract by RATP to supply its latest CBTC GoA4 driverless automation technology for Paris Metro Line 13, one of the capital’s busiest routes. The project, commissioned by Île-de-France Mobilités, will modernise and fully automate the 24-kilometer north–south line, which serves 32 stations and carries more than 550,000 passengers daily.

The contract includes delivery of a new train operation automation system, the renovation of the Operations Control Center, and on-board equipment for 66 trains, with an option for a long-term maintenance agreement of up to 30 years. By late 2032, Line 13 is expected to transition from its current GoA2 semi-automatic system to a GoA4 fully driverless operation, significantly improving service frequency, capacity, and reliability.

“We are proud that RATP has once again chosen Siemens Mobility as a trusted partner for automation in Paris,” said Marc Ludwig, CEO of Siemens Mobility Rail Infrastructure. “With this project, Line 13 will benefit from our proven CBTC GoA4 technology, which not only enhances capacity and performance but also supports Paris’ ambition to provide decarbonized, high-quality public transport. Building on our achievements with Lines 1, 4, and 14, this contract demonstrates how we are helping shape the future of mobility in the city.”

The modernization effort begins with the introduction of new rolling stock in 2027, followed by the integration of Siemens Mobility’s advanced automation system. The technology will reduce train headways, allow flexible scheduling based on passenger demand, optimise energy usage, and deliver real-time passenger information inside trains.

The project will be executed from Siemens Mobility’s global center of excellence for rail automation and cybersecurity in Châtillon, just outside Paris, where more than 500 engineers specialize in system design and development.

Line 13 is a vital part of the Paris Metro network, linking Châtillon-Montrouge in the southwest with the northern terminals of Saint-Denis-Université and Les Courtilles, and connecting to major hubs such as Saint-Lazare and Montparnasse-Bienvenüe. Its heavy passenger load, particularly north of Saint-Lazare where the line branches, makes automation a critical step to improving passenger comfort and reliability.
