Siemens Mobility Secures First Order for Vectron Locomotives with New Battery Power Module for Last-Mile Operations

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Mobility has secured its first order for Vectron locomotives equipped with a battery power module that allows them to operate over short distances without overhead power lines, making them ideal for last-mile operations and shunting tasks. JeMyn AG, part of Widmer Rail Services, placed the order for two locomotives, with financing arranged through Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft. The new battery module is part of the federal “Future of Rail Freight Transport” program and aims to reduce CO2 emissions and improve operational efficiency. With over 2,600 Vectron locomotives sold and over a billion kilometers logged, the Vectron platform continues to lead in European rail transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 5-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens Mobility has secured its first order for Vectron locomotives equipped with a new battery power module, enhancing their ability to operate without overhead power lines over short distances. This breakthrough enables Vectron locomotives to cover the last mile of service and perform shunting tasks without relying on traditional power sources. The energy required for these operations is supplied by a high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack, which is managed by an intelligent battery system designed to optimize charging and discharging. This development, part of the federal “Future of Rail Freight Transport” program, was designed to accelerate the market introduction of innovative rail solutions, enhancing logistics and competitiveness in the sector.

JeMyn AG, part of Widmer Rail Services, has placed an order for two Vectron AC locomotives equipped with the battery module, which will help bolster the Widmer Rail Services fleet. The financing for the purchase was arranged through a structured solution in collaboration with Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft, ensuring early financial backing. The locomotives are expected to be delivered in 2027.

“We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Widmer Rail Services AG and appreciate their continued confidence in the Vectron platform,” said Andre Rodenbeck, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility. “This innovative battery power module allows our customers to fully electrify their operational routes, reducing CO2 emissions further and contributing to a greener rail transport solution.”

Pierre Widmer, CEO of Widmer Rail Services AG, expressed excitement over the addition: “The new battery power module makes the Vectron the perfect locomotive for our needs. This functional package allows us to handle shunting operations more efficiently, without relying on additional shunting locomotives. This will optimize our operations and result in cost savings.”

Peter von Flüe from Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft emphasized the bank’s role in supporting sustainable transport: “We are pleased to contribute to the advancement of sustainable rail transport with our financing solution, supporting both JeMyn AG and Widmer Rail Services AG in their development.”

The Vectron’s modular design offers operators increased flexibility, especially in areas lacking overhead power lines. By using the battery power module, operators can forgo electric or diesel-powered shunting locomotives, yielding both economic and environmental benefits. The new addition to the Vectron family is an important step forward in reducing emissions and noise pollution in rail transport.

Siemens Mobility has sold more than 2,600 Vectron locomotives to 103 customers across 16 countries, with the fleet having logged over one billion kilometers in operation. Vectron locomotives are now approved for use in 20 European countries, proving their efficiency and reliability in daily service.
