Salzgitter AG Earns CDP Climate A Rating Again as SALCOS® Drives Low-Carbon Steel Transformation

Top in climate protection: Salzgitter AG once again receives the highest rating in the CDP rating

(IN BRIEF) Salzgitter AG has been awarded CDP’s top “A” rating for climate protection for the second year in a row, placing it among the top four percent of more than 23,000 companies assessed worldwide. The recognition reflects the Group’s transparent climate reporting, robust risk management and concrete emissions-reduction measures. Central to this achievement is the “Salzgitter AG 2030” strategy and the SALCOS® transformation programme, which aims to convert steel production to hydrogen-based processes. The repeated top rating highlights Salzgitter AG’s pioneering role in low-CO₂ steelmaking and its long-term commitment to combining industrial competitiveness with climate responsibility.

(PRESS RELEASE) SALZGITTER, 19-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Salzgitter AG has once again received the highest possible rating from the global non-profit organisation CDP, earning an “A” score for climate protection for the second consecutive year. This achievement places the company among the top four percent of more than 23,000 companies worldwide assessed by CDP for their climate transparency, risk management and environmental performance.

The repeat top rating underscores Salzgitter AG’s consistent and long-term commitment to sustainable transformation within the steel industry. CDP’s evaluation focuses on the transparent disclosure of environmental data, the systematic identification and management of climate-related risks, the implementation of effective governance structures, and the execution of concrete measures aimed at reducing environmental impact. Companies awarded an “A” rating must also demonstrate best practices and set ambitious, science-based climate targets.

Salzgitter AG’s success is closely linked to its clearly defined “Salzgitter AG 2030” corporate strategy, which places climate protection and industrial competitiveness at its core. Central to this strategy is SALCOS® (Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking), the company’s flagship transformation programme designed to gradually convert conventional steel production to hydrogen-based processes. Through SALCOS®, Salzgitter AG is positioning itself as a pioneer of competitive low-carbon steel production in Germany while actively contributing to the decarbonisation of heavy industry.

Gunnar Groebler, Chairman of the Executive Board of Salzgitter AG, emphasised that the renewed recognition confirms the company’s strategic direction: sustainability and efficient industrial production are not mutually exclusive, even in challenging market conditions. He highlighted that SALCOS® represents a clear commitment to responsibility and innovation, reinforcing Salzgitter AG’s role as a driving force behind the transformation of the steel sector. The second consecutive “A” rating, he added, serves both as encouragement and as an obligation to continue advancing the company’s climate ambitions with determination.

Salzgitter AG has participated in CDP’s reporting framework annually since 2016. Over this period, the Group has steadily strengthened its climate governance, expanded collaborative partnerships, and enhanced innovation across the value chain. The latest CDP rating reflects these ongoing efforts and confirms Salzgitter AG’s position as a leading industrial player actively shaping the transition toward a low-carbon future.
