The SLWT, also known as Torped 47, is designed for deployment from submarines, surface ships, and helicopters, with specific adaptations for the complex conditions of the Baltic Sea. (PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 7-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Saab has been granted a SEK 1.3 billion order by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply its Saab Lightweight Torpedoes (SLWT) and associated torpedo tubes. The deliveries, set to begin in 2026, will significantly enhance Sweden’s underwater defense capabilities.

The Saab Lightweight Torpedo, known as Torped 47 by the Swedish Armed Forces, is an advanced weapon system designed to improve Sweden’s defense infrastructure. It is intended for use on submarines and surface vessels, with capabilities also extended to potential helicopter integration. This order marks Saab’s second major contract for the SLWT from Sweden, building on successful deliveries that began in 2022.

Mats Wicksell, Head of Saab’s Kockums business area, expressed pride in continuing Saab’s collaboration with Sweden. “This contract further strengthens our commitment to enhancing Sweden’s defense capabilities. The SLWT is a state-of-the-art system that equips the Swedish Armed Forces with vital tools, from the torpedoes themselves to comprehensive training and technical support.”

The SLWT is specially designed for deployment in the challenging environment of the Baltic Sea. The shallow waters and complex seabed topology of the region present unique operational demands, particularly in submarine detection, navigation, and communication during torpedo deployment. The SLWT has been developed to meet these needs, ensuring optimal performance in this critical defense area.
