RWE Installs First Monopile at Thor Offshore Wind Farm, Advancing Towards Denmark’s Largest Renewable Energy Project

(IN BRIEF) RWE has installed the first monopile at the Thor offshore wind farm, marking the beginning of the largest renewable energy project in Denmark. The wind farm, set to be fully operational in 2027, will generate enough electricity to power over one million homes. With sustainable features such as CO2-reduced steel towers and recyclable rotor blades, the Thor project highlights RWE’s commitment to advancing offshore wind energy and sustainability. Local jobs and a new service building at the Port of Thorsminde will also be created as part of the project.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN/COPENHAGEN, 30-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has successfully installed the first of 72 monopiles at the Thor offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea, marking a significant milestone in the development of the 1.1 gigawatt (GW) project. The monopiles, weighing up to 1,500 metric tons each and measuring 100 meters in length, were transported from Eemshaven, the Netherlands, to the construction site approximately 22 kilometers off the coast of Jutland. The installation was carried out by the vessel “Les Alizés,” with five monopiles being shipped in each load.

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, celebrated the achievement, stating: “The installation of the first monopile is a highly symbolic moment in the construction of Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. It reflects the dedication of the entire RWE team after years of meticulous planning. Our expertise in delivering large-scale offshore wind projects is now being showcased in Thor, which will be a major contributor to Denmark’s renewable energy landscape.”

The Thor project incorporates sustainable features, including reused hard covers to protect the monopiles from harsh sea conditions and CO2-reduced steel towers for 36 turbines. Additionally, 40 turbines will be equipped with recyclable rotor blades, further advancing RWE’s commitment to sustainability.

Construction is progressing well, with turbine installation set to begin in 2026, with full operation expected in 2027. Once operational, Thor will produce enough green electricity to power over one million Danish homes. The project is also expected to create local employment opportunities, with 50 to 60 jobs in a new service building at the Port of Thorsminde, currently under construction.
