RWE Advances Thor Offshore Wind Project with New Service Hub Strengthening Renewable Energy Infrastructure in Denmark

(IN BRIEF) RWE has opened a new operations and maintenance base at Thorsminde Port to support the Thor offshore wind farm, Denmark’s largest offshore wind project. The 2,300 square metre facility will serve as the central hub for managing the wind farm, which is expected to be fully operational by 2027 and capable of powering more than one million households. Designed and built by Danish companies, the base combines advanced operational capabilities with a design inspired by the local environment and will create up to 60 permanent jobs. The Thor project, a joint venture between RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management, is progressing on schedule and incorporates innovative, lower-carbon technologies, reinforcing RWE’s leadership in offshore wind development.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 27-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has officially inaugurated a new operations and maintenance base at Thorsminde Port to support the Thor offshore wind farm, Denmark’s largest offshore wind project. The opening marks a key milestone in the development of the wind farm and highlights the company’s continued investment in renewable energy infrastructure and local economic development.

The newly completed facility, spanning 2,300 square metres across three floors, will serve as the central hub for maintaining and operating the Thor wind farm. Its location at Thorsminde Port offers direct and efficient access to the offshore site by both sea and air, making it a strategic base for long-term operations. Once the wind farm becomes fully operational in 2027, the site is expected to host a team of 50 to 60 specialists who will oversee operations and maintenance around the clock for decades.

Designed by Danish architecture firms ATRA arkitekter and Frandsen & Søndergaard, and constructed by Østermark Entreprenørforretning, the building integrates advanced operational facilities with a design that reflects the surrounding coastal environment. The base includes a control room, warehousing areas and office space, alongside amenities such as a lounge-style canteen and rooftop terrace. Its design incorporates natural materials and colours inspired by the nearby dunes and landscape, while offering views over Nissum Fjord and the North Sea.

The Thor offshore wind farm itself is progressing on schedule. With a total planned capacity of 1.1 gigawatts, the project will feature 72 turbines, each capable of generating up to 15 megawatts. Key milestones have already been achieved, including the installation of all foundations and the offshore substation, as well as the recent installation of the first turbine. The project is also notable for incorporating innovative technologies, such as steel turbine towers produced with a reduced carbon footprint and the use of recyclable rotor blades on selected turbines.

Electricity generation has already begun, with the first power successfully delivered to the Danish grid. Once fully operational, the Thor wind farm will be capable of supplying renewable energy to more than one million Danish households, contributing significantly to the country’s energy transition goals.

The project is being developed as a joint venture between RWE, which holds a 51% stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns the remaining 49%. RWE is responsible for both construction and long-term operation of the wind farm.

The opening of the Thorsminde base also brings economic benefits to the region, with the creation of up to 60 permanent jobs and increased activity within the local business community. The development reinforces RWE’s position as a leading player in offshore wind, with 19 operational wind farms globally and several major projects currently under construction across Europe.
