Rheinmetall Secures Major Bundeswehr Ammunition Order Under Expanded Puma Framework Agreement

(IN BRIEF) Rheinmetall has secured a major new ammunition order from the Bundeswehr, worth several hundred million euros, under an expanded framework agreement originally signed in December 2022. The contract covers the supply of 30mm x 173 ammunition for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle and runs through 2029, with the total framework now providing for deliveries valued at around €1 billion. The latest call-off includes a medium six-figure quantity of ammunition and supports the German Armed Forces’ efforts to strengthen readiness and replenish stocks amid the current security environment. Rheinmetall supplies two advanced ammunition types for the Puma — KE-TF DM21 and KE DM33 — both certified to the latest standards and designed to deliver high reliability, precision, and effectiveness against land, air, and semi-hard targets, including drones. The order reinforces Rheinmetall’s position as a leading supplier of medium-calibre ammunition and underlines its strategic role in supporting the Bundeswehr’s modernisation and operational capabilities.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 6-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Rheinmetall has secured a major new ammunition order from the Bundeswehr, further expanding the long-term supply agreement for 30mm ammunition used by the German Armed Forces’ infantry fighting vehicles. The newly placed order carries a value in the several-hundred-million-euro range and builds on the existing framework contract signed in December 2022.

Under the extended agreement, Rheinmetall will deliver additional quantities of 30mm x 173 ammunition for the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The original framework contract, which runs through 2029, has now been significantly increased in both volume and value. In total, it provides for the delivery of several hundred thousand cartridges with an overall contract value of around €1 billion. As part of the latest call-off, a mid six-figure quantity of ammunition has already been retrieved, contributing to the substantial order intake now recorded by Rheinmetall.

The expanded ammunition procurement supports the Bundeswehr’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its Puma fleet. Recently, the German Armed Forces commissioned joint venture partners Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland to supply 200 additional Puma infantry fighting vehicles. The Puma is equipped with Rheinmetall’s MK30-2/ABM automatic cannon, a weapon system known for its high rate of fire and advanced programmable ammunition technology. With an effective engagement range exceeding 2,000 meters, the system is capable of addressing land, air, and sea targets with exceptional precision and reliability.

Rheinmetall manufactures and supplies two types of combat-ready 30mm ammunition for the Puma IFV: KE-TF DM21 and KE DM33. Both ammunition variants have been developed and certified to the latest standards and are recognized for their reliability, penetration performance, and accuracy. The programmable KE-TF (Kinetic Energy Time Fuse) round is specifically designed to engage larger soft and semi-hard targets, as well as aerial threats such as drones, providing the Puma with enhanced operational flexibility.

The latest order highlights Rheinmetall’s role as a key supplier of medium-calibre ammunition to the Bundeswehr and reflects the armed forces’ continued focus on replenishing ammunition stocks and strengthening readiness in response to the current security environment. Rheinmetall remains one of the world’s leading manufacturers of medium-calibre ammunition, supplying advanced solutions to armed forces worldwide.
