Repsol Begins Power Generation at Antofagasta Phase 1 Wind Farm, Chile’s New Renewable Giant

(IN BRIEF) Repsol has begun power production at Antofagasta Phase 1, its largest wind farm and one of Chile’s most significant renewable energy projects. Located in Taltal, the 364 MW facility required nearly €400 million in investment and will soon enter commercial operation after 19 months of construction. Expected to generate 750 GWh annually—enough for 220,000 Chilean households—this marks Repsol’s first fully self-developed renewable project in Chile. The company is also planning the 450 MW Antofagasta Phase 2 in the same region. Repsol, which jointly operates additional wind farms in Chile with Ibereólica Renovables, now has nearly 4,000 MW in renewable capacity worldwide and a development pipeline of 60,000 MW.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 14-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Repsol has begun generating electricity at Antofagasta Phase 1, the company’s largest wind energy facility to date and one of the biggest wind farms in Chile. Located in the district of Taltal in the Antofagasta region, the wind farm boasts an installed capacity of 364 megawatts (MW).

Representing an investment of nearly €400 million, Antofagasta Phase 1 marks Repsol’s first fully developed renewable energy project in Chile. The facility will enter full commercial operation in the coming weeks, following a 19-month construction period. Once fully operational, it is expected to produce 750 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually—enough to supply the equivalent of 220,000 Chilean homes.

The project signals a major step forward in Repsol’s commitment to expanding its renewable footprint in Latin America. In the same region, the company is preparing to launch construction of Antofagasta Phase 2, which will contribute an additional 450 MW of installed capacity, further cementing Repsol’s role in the country’s clean energy transition.

Repsol entered the Chilean renewables market through a 50/50 joint venture with Ibereólica Renovables Group. The joint company, Repsol Ibereólica Renovables Chile, currently operates two major wind projects: the 188 MW Cabo Leones III and the 166 MW Atacama wind farms, both situated in the Huasco province of the Atacama Desert. In contrast, the Antofagasta Phase 1 and 2 projects are wholly owned and developed by Repsol.

With nearly 4,000 MW of renewable capacity already in operation and a global pipeline of 60,000 MW at various stages of development, Repsol continues to scale up its investment in low-carbon energy infrastructure as part of its broader energy transition strategy.
