Repsol and Volotea’s Strategic Partnership to Decarbonize Aviation with Sustainable Fuel

(IN BRIEF) Repsol and Volotea have formed a strategic partnership to supply over 6 million liters of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for Volotea flights from Spanish airports between 2025 and 2029. This collaboration is set to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and supports the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation. Repsol will produce the SAF from waste products at its new 100% renewable fuels plant in Cartagena. The agreement underscores both companies’ commitment to sustainability and the decarbonization of the aviation sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 1-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Repsol S.A. (BME: REP), a Spanish multinational energy and petrochemical company, and Volotea have announced a strategic agreement to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for Volotea flights departing from Spanish airports. Under this agreement, Repsol will provide up to 6.1 million liters of SAF to Volotea from 2025 to 2029. This initiative is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 80% compared to traditional kerosene, aligning with the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation set to take effect next year.

The SAF supplied by Repsol is derived from waste products such as used cooking oil and complies with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) standards. Valero Marín, Repsol’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasized the company’s commitment to aviation in Spain and highlighted the role of their 100% renewable fuels plant in Cartagena in meeting the growing demand for SAF.

Carlos Muñoz, Founder and CEO of Volotea, reiterated the airline’s dedication to sustainable aviation and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. He called for further incentives to stimulate the use of sustainable fuels within the industry. Volotea has been incorporating SAF into its operations since 2022 and has partnered with Airbus to use SAF on flights between Hamburg and Toulouse.

Repsol, a pioneer in renewable fuel production in Spain, began producing 100% renewable fuels at its Cartagena plant this year. The facility, the first of its kind in Spain and Portugal, has a production capacity of 250,000 tonnes per year. Repsol aims to increase its production capacity to 1.7 million tonnes of renewable fuels by 2027 and 2.7 million tonnes by 2030, leading the market in the Iberian Peninsula.

This agreement marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the aviation industry and achieving the environmental goals set by both companies.
