Ramboll Expands Americas Biodiversity Metric to Cover Full North American Habitat Data

(IN BRIEF) Ramboll has released ABM 2.0, an upgraded biodiversity quantification tool now covering the entire United States, Canada, and northern Mexico. Adapted from the Natural England Biodiversity Metric and developed with NatureServe, the ABM initially focused on habitats in three northeastern U.S. states. The new version incorporates detailed habitat data across most of North America, enabling planners and developers to assess and value ecological assets more accurately. Positioned alongside Ramboll’s Global Biodiversity Metric, ABM 2.0 helps ensure land-use and development projects achieve measurable net-positive impacts on nature.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 1-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Ramboll today unveils the Americas Biodiversity Metric (ABM) 2.0, a significantly enhanced, free biodiversity assessment tool now encompassing detailed habitat data across the United States, Canada, and northern Mexico. Building on its April 2024 debut, this major upgrade equips planners and developers with robust, region-wide insights to secure measurable net-positive nature outcomes for new projects and land-use changes.

Originally modeled on the UK’s Natural England Biodiversity Metric and crafted in collaboration with NatureServe, ABM 1.0 addressed habitats in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The expanded ABM 2.0 now integrates comprehensive habitat inventories for nearly all of North America, enabling more accurate valuation of ecological assets and guiding sustainable decision-making continent-wide.

Daniel Rockefeller, Biodiversity Metrics US Lead, highlights the ABM’s pioneering role: “As the first tool of its kind in North America, the ABM offers an innovative framework for quantifying biodiversity. With its broadened geographic coverage, this update delivers unparalleled clarity on habitat value, fostering stronger ecological planning and sustainable development across the region.”

ABM 2.0 complements Ramboll’s Global Biodiversity Metric (GBM), together forming a toolkit that empowers organizations to embed nature-positive targets into land-use planning and development siting. By leveraging these metrics, stakeholders can design projects that demonstrably enhance biodiversity and contribute to nature net-positive outcomes.
