Nokia Chosen by Optus to Deliver Cloud-Native IMS on Hybrid OpenShift for 5G Voice

(IN BRIEF) Nokia will deploy its Cloud Native Communication Suite on Optus’ hybrid cloud platform—powered by Red Hat OpenShift and Optus’ public cloud—to replace the incumbent IMS voice solution. The fully containerized CNCS will automate core network functions via Kubernetes, improving resiliency, security and energy efficiency while reducing manual operations. This upgrade enables Optus to accelerate rollout of advanced 5G voice services for over 10 million customers. Both companies emphasize that cloud-native design underlies greater operational agility, lower energy usage and simplified management, marking a strategic evolution in Optus’ network architecture.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 31-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia has been selected by Optus, Australia’s second-largest mobile operator, to modernize its voice infrastructure by deploying Nokia’s Cloud Native Communication Suite (CNCS). Replacing a competing vendor, this contract represents another significant Nokia Core victory in the Oceania region. Optus will run CNCS on a hybrid cloud architecture—combining on-premises resources with Optus’ public cloud—underpinned by Red Hat OpenShift, to deliver resilient, automated 5G voice services to more than 10 million subscribers.

Built from the ground up for cloud environments, Nokia’s CNCS containerizes core network functions and orchestrates them via Kubernetes to enhance operational efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and minimize manual intervention. This modernized IMS platform will bolster network resiliency, reinforce security, and accelerate time-to-market for new voice-centric offerings.

Tony Baird, Chief Technology Officer at Optus, commented: “Voice remains a critical pillar of our network strategy. Nokia’s cloud-native CNCS provides us with a flexible, highly reliable pathway to enhance service quality and deliver faster, more secure voice features—all underpinned by intelligent automation tools across on-premise and cloud deployments.”

Raghav Sahgal, President of Cloud and Network Services at Nokia, added: “We’re delighted to extend our collaboration with Optus. Our CNCS architecture simplifies network complexity and enables operators to roll out advanced 5G services swiftly in multi-cloud environments. This partnership underscores Nokia’s commitment to helping service providers deliver seamless, high-performance experiences.”
