The hub integrates advanced cargo management systems, a dedicated Pharma Centre, and energy-efficient infrastructure, achieving an ‘A’ EPC rating and supporting Swissport’s goal to electrify 55% of its ground equipment by 2032. The investment strengthens Manchester’s role as a logistics hub, supports regional job creation, and aligns with Swissport’s global cargo growth plan, which includes key international projects such as the Shanghai Pudong partnership.

(PRESS RELEASE) MANCHESTER, 24-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Swissport has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art cargo facility at Manchester Airport, marking a major investment in the UK’s air freight infrastructure and doubling its annual handling capacity to 110,000 tons. The development, known as Box 4, represents a key step in Swissport’s global strategy to enhance operational efficiency, digital innovation, and sustainable growth across its cargo network.

The new facility expands Swissport’s operational footprint at Manchester Airport by 67% compared to its previous site. Officially inaugurated on 23 October and commencing full operations on 27 October, the event brought together representatives from airlines, airport authorities, logistics partners, and the regional freight community to celebrate this milestone in the company’s UK operations.

“Manchester is a critical hub for the UK’s air cargo network, and this new facility demonstrates Swissport’s long-term commitment to investing in the infrastructure and technology required to meet evolving market needs,” said Joe Bellfield, Chief Operating Officer Cargo UK&I at Swissport. “Our expanded site enhances our ability to manage a wide range of cargo—from e-commerce and perishables to pharmaceuticals and high-value goods—with the highest levels of safety, security, and efficiency.”

Stephen Turner, Chief Commercial Officer at Manchester Airport, emphasized the regional impact: “We’re proud to connect the North not only through passenger travel but also as a key hub for international trade. This new facility will help local businesses grow, support job creation, and encourage airlines to expand their operations from Manchester.”

The Box 4 facility is equipped with cutting-edge cargo handling systems that streamline the transfer of Unit Load Devices (ULDs), reducing manual handling and improving turnaround times. A dedicated Pharma Centre ensures precise management of temperature-sensitive shipments such as pharmaceuticals and perishables, with temperature-controlled rooms and advanced racking systems. The open-plan layout, dock levellers, and enhanced tenant areas support a seamless and efficient operational flow, accommodating the handling of complex and time-critical freight.

Swissport’s new hub reflects its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The facility holds an ‘A’ Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating and features smart lighting and intelligent energy management systems. Infrastructure has been pre-installed to support the complete electrification of ground service equipment (eGSE) within two years—advancing Swissport’s global objective to electrify 55% of its GSE fleet by 2032 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

As a major gateway for international cargo, Manchester Airport plays a crucial role in regional and national logistics. Swissport’s investment strengthens the airport’s capacity to handle the surging demands of global trade, particularly in e-commerce and specialized freight, while reinforcing local supply chain resilience. The site initially employs 95 team members, transferred from the previous location, with further recruitment planned as operations expand.

The new Manchester facility forms part of Swissport’s broader UK and global expansion strategy, following major developments across Europe and Asia, including its partnership to manage the Digital & Intelligent International Cargo Terminal at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Together, these initiatives highlight Swissport’s leadership in delivering efficient, technology-driven, and sustainable cargo handling solutions worldwide.
