(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 14-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Telefónica today announced significant new appointments within its leadership team. The company has named Álvaro Echevarría as its new Chief of Staff and introduced Piedad Álvarez de Arriba as Global Security Director.

Álvaro Echevarría will begin his role as Chief of Staff in the coming weeks, soon becoming a member of Telefónica’s Executive Committee. Currently serving as Deputy General Manager and Director of Institutional Relations and Corporate Security at Banco Sabadell—a company where he has amassed over 22 years of experience in various key roles—Echevarría brings a wealth of expertise. His academic credentials include a degree in Business Administration and Management from IQS-Universitat Ramon Llull, an MBA from ESADE, a PDG from IESE, and a postgraduate qualification in Banking Business from UPF.

In a parallel move, Telefónica has appointed Piedad Álvarez de Arriba as Global Security Director, a role in which she will report directly to the Secretary General. Previously, Álvarez de Arriba held the position of Chief Commissioner and served as Head of the Central Cybercrime Unit of the Judicial Police. With a professional career spanning more than three decades in this organization, she has established herself as a leading authority in Security Forces and cybercrime on an international scale.

Furthermore, Telefónica is set to accelerate its transformation journey through the establishment of a new Transformation Office, which will be led by María García-Legaz. García-Legaz, who is currently the company’s Chief of Staff and has dedicated over 30 years to Telefónica, will support the COO in managing cross-departmental projects for the Group. Her extensive background in finance, investor relations, and roles within the Chairman’s office positions her perfectly to drive forward the strategic review recently announced by the company.

In addition to these new appointments, the company is bidding farewell to Miguel Sánchez, who has served as Global Security Director until now. Approaching his 65th birthday, Sánchez will be retiring in the coming weeks. Telefónica expressed its gratitude for his steadfast support, particularly in facilitating the transition for Piedad Álvarez de Arriba, and lauded his exceptional contributions over the past nine years, notably for his leadership in establishing Telefónica’s Global Security team as a market benchmark.
