Max Hohenberg to join Commerzbank as Divisional Board Member for Communications amid bank’s transformation phase

(IN BRIEF) Commerzbank has appointed Max Hohenberg as its new Head of Communications, effective no later than 1 January 2026. He will succeed Philipp Encz and take responsibility for Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, Brand & Research, and the Commerzbank Foundation, reporting to CEO Bettina Orlopp. Hohenberg brings nearly two decades of experience as a partner at communications consultancy Kekst CNC, where he advised financial sector clients, and previously served as Head of Identity & Communications at UniCredit Group. With an early career at Citi and academic credentials from the University of Eichstätt and the London School of Economics, Hohenberg is expected to bring deep expertise and international networks to strengthen Commerzbank’s communications during a period of growth and transformation.

(PRESS RELEASE) FRANKFURT, 22-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Commerzbank has announced the appointment of Max Hohenberg as its new Head of Communications, with his tenure set to begin no later than 1 January 2026. Hohenberg, 55, will succeed Philipp Encz, who passed away unexpectedly in June.

In his new role as Divisional Board Member for Corporate Communications, Hohenberg will oversee Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Brand & Research. His responsibilities will span corporate and political communications, coordination with liaison offices in Brussels and Berlin, brand management, market research, and the Commerzbank Foundation. He will report directly to Bettina Orlopp, CEO of Commerzbank AG.

With his background as a banker and his long career as consultant and communicator in all areas of corporate communications, he brings a high level of industry expertise and an excellent network.”

Hohenberg joins Commerzbank from the communications consultancy Kekst CNC, where he worked for nearly 20 years as a partner, with a focus on advising financial sector clients on strategic positioning and stakeholder engagement. Between 2018 and 2022, he served as Head of Identity & Communications at UniCredit Group, overseeing brand and communications during a crucial period of development for the company. Earlier in his career, Hohenberg worked as a banker at Citi.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Eichstätt and a master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. His appointment is expected to further strengthen Commerzbank’s communications strategy and support the bank’s ongoing transformation journey.
