Marks & Spencer Scales Up Beauty Recycling Initiative to 100 UK Stores, Promoting Sustainable Choices for Shoppers

(IN BRIEF) Marks & Spencer has expanded its Beauty Takeback Scheme to 100 stores across the UK, allowing customers to recycle beauty packaging easily. Launched with HANDLE, this initiative has diverted over 1.6 tonnes of packaging from landfills, contributing to M&S’s Plan A for sustainability and circularity.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 13-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Marks & Spencer (M&S) has expanded its Beauty Takeback Scheme by adding 60 new locations, bringing the total number of participating stores across the UK to 100. Through this initiative, launched in partnership with HANDLE as part of M&S’s Plan A sustainability strategy, customers can recycle any plastic or aluminum beauty packaging from any brand. Special takeback boxes are now available in new locations like Birmingham, Cardiff, and Inverness, making recycling more accessible.

Since its launch in June 2023, the scheme has processed over 1.6 tonnes of beauty packaging that would have otherwise contributed to landfill waste. As a result of the partnership with HANDLE, M&S has introduced a wide-toothed hair comb crafted from 98% recycled beauty packaging, available online and in selected stores.

Plan A’s ‘Another Life’ initiative, which also includes partnerships with SOJO for repairs and Oxfam for clothing donations, aims to support a circular economy by making recycling and product longevity services easily accessible. Katharine Beacham, Head of Sustainability for Clothing & Home at M&S, highlighted the popularity of the scheme, saying, “We’re thrilled to expand our Beauty Takeback Scheme to more stores, giving customers a simple way to recycle and extend the life of their beauty products.”
