Maersk Launches AI-Driven Trade & Tariff Studio to Bring Order to “Tariff Chaos”

(IN BRIEF) Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio is a new AI-powered platform centralizing customs brokerage and tariff optimisation to tackle “tariff chaos.” Launching 28 June in the U.S. (global August), it consolidates data from multiple brokers, reduces duty overpayments (5–6%), prevents delays (20% of shipments), and maximizes Free Trade Agreement usage (currently 50–55%). Features include automated tariff code application, upstream compliance screening, real-time regulatory updates from 2,700 customs experts, and seamless integration with local brokers. The tool also addresses emerging rules like CBAM and deforestation regulations, helping customers avoid penalties and maintain smooth cross-border operations.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 25-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Maersk has unveiled Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio, an AI-driven digital platform that centralizes customs and tariff management to help cargo owners navigate today’s unpredictable trade landscape. As global trade shifts from decades of falling barriers to an era of sudden tariff hikes, regulatory scrutiny, and customs delays, the new solution delivers clarity, compliance, agility, and cost savings at border crossings.

Piloted with major importers, Trade & Tariff Studio will launch on 28 June for U.S. cargo, with a global roll-out planned for August. While ideally embedded within Maersk’s integrated logistics services, the platform can also operate standalone.

By consolidating fragmented data from numerous local brokers, it addresses key pain points:

  • Overpaid duties: On average, 5–6% of tariffs are paid in excess due to decentralized data and lack of optimization.
  • Customs delays: Poor preparation accounts for 20% of shipment hold-ups.
  • Unused FTAs: Only 50–55% of eligible trade leverages Free Trade Agreements—over 650 exist, but their complexity often precludes full utilisation.

Trade & Tariff Studio offers:

  • AI-powered tariff engineering, correctly applying more than 6,000 product codes and 20,000+ sub-codes.
  • Upstream compliance screening, preventing costly delays and penalties.
  • Real-time regulatory updates from data partners and Maersk’s 2,700-strong customs network.
  • Integration with trusted local brokers under a unified global view.

“Customs declaration is one of global logistics’ most intricate challenges,” says Lars Karlsson, Maersk’s Global Head of Trade & Customs Consulting. “With Trade & Tariff Studio, we’re not just simplifying complexity—we’re transforming it into a competitive edge.”

The solution also equips customers to meet evolving regulations—from product safety and labour standards to environmental mandates like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and anti-deforestation rules—shielding them from fines and market restrictions. As U.S. customs inspections intensify, Maersk’s dual role as consultant and fulfillment partner becomes ever more vital for uninterrupted trade flows.
