Maersk christens Berlin Mærsk as largest dual-fuel methanol ship to join its fleet

(IN BRIEF) Maersk has named Berlin Mærsk, its 14th dual-fuel methanol container ship, at HHI’s Ulsan facility on 18 June 2025. Part of a six-ship series delivered this year under the Danish flag, Berlin Mærsk retains the Ane Mærsk class layout but adds a wider beam for increased capacity, positioning it as Maersk’s largest dual-fuel vessel. Anda Cristescu emphasised that this launch underpins the company’s fleet-renewal strategy and decarbonisation goals by offering a platform compatible with diverse fuel pathways. Ole Graa Jakobsen remarked on the industry’s growing methanol propulsion uptake since Maersk’s first order in 2021, and Berlin Mærsk is set to enter service on 7 July via Shanghai on the AE3 route.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 19-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — A.P. Moller – Maersk has officially christened its newest dual-fuel container vessel, Berlin Mærsk, at Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan yard on 18 June 2025. The 17,480 TEU ship is the 14th to join Maersk’s fleet powered by methanol propulsion and will be one of six sister vessels delivered this year by HHI under the Danish flag. Head of Chartering & Newbuilding Anda Cristescu highlighted that launching the Berlin Mærsk series reinforces Maersk’s strategy of renewing its fleet with adaptable ships that support multiple low-carbon fuel options, thereby sustaining its leadership in ocean shipping.

Berlin Mærsk closely follows the proven design of the Ane Mærsk class but features a broader beam to boost container capacity, making it the largest dual-fuel vessel to date in Maersk’s orderbook. Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology, noted that since Maersk’s inaugural methanol-powered newbuild order in 2021, interest in this propulsion technology has surged across the industry, and the Berlin Mærsk class sets a fresh benchmark for efficiency and innovation. Berlin Mærsk will commence its maiden voyage on 7 July with a port call in Shanghai, joining Maersk’s AE3 service that links Eastern Asia and Northern Europe.
