MacGregor’s New Carbon Calculator Helps Shipping Companies Cut Emissions and Boost Efficiency

(IN BRIEF) MacGregor has launched a free digital Carbon Calculator to help container shipping companies estimate how much CO₂ emissions can be reduced by upgrading to its Cargo Boost system. By maximizing cargo-carrying capacity, Cargo Boost can increase utilization from 80% to up to 100%, potentially adding the equivalent capacity of an extra vessel across a 10-ship fleet. The tool calculates CO₂ savings per TEU, reductions in fuel costs, and additional revenue, providing shipping companies with clear insights into the environmental and financial benefits of upgrading.

(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 30-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — MacGregor, a division of Cargotec, has introduced a new digital Carbon Calculator aimed at helping container shipping companies quantify potential reductions in CO₂ emissions by upgrading their cargo systems with MacGregor’s Cargo Boost. The calculator, available free of charge, enables ship operators to estimate the impact of increased cargo capacity on emissions, fuel costs, and Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) payments.

Cargo Boost enhances the cargo-carrying efficiency of existing container ships, potentially raising system utilization from 80% to as high as 100%. For a fleet of 10 vessels, this increase is comparable to adding the capacity of an extra ship. By entering vessel specifications and operational data into the calculator, users receive estimates on CO₂ reduction per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), cost savings on fuel, and additional revenue potential in USD.

Magnus Sjöberg, Senior Vice President of MacGregor’s Equipment Solutions Division, emphasizes that maximizing cargo capacity is central to container ship efficiency, as it boosts revenue and reduces fuel consumption per tonnage, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced ETS payments. The Carbon Calculator provides transparent, data-driven insights into these savings for both individual ships and entire fleets.
