KPN to Invest Over €5 Billion in Fiber, 5G, Cybersecurity, and AI to Accelerate the Digitalization of the Netherlands

(IN BRIEF) KPN will invest more than €5 billion by 2030 in fiber expansion, 5G, AI, and cybersecurity as part of its updated Connect, Activate & Grow strategy. The telecom leader is raising its fiber coverage goal from 80% to 85% of Dutch households, focusing on connecting more users and enhancing digital resilience. Major cybersecurity initiatives include real-time DDoS protection, sovereign cloud services with NL-ix, and new consumer and business security offerings such as KPN SuperVeilig and Extra Veilig Internet. Through its #BetterInternet mission, KPN continues to advance sustainability, cutting energy use and transitioning to a fully electric fleet by 2030.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 5-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — KPN has announced plans to invest more than €5 billion through 2030 as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen the Netherlands’ digital infrastructure, expand fiber coverage, and boost cybersecurity and AI capabilities. The investments, outlined during KPN’s recent Strategy Update, will support the next phase of the company’s Connect, Activate & Grow strategy—focused on securing businesses and consumers against cyber threats, enhancing customer service, and driving sustainable digital transformation nationwide.

Already a leader in fiber rollout, KPN currently provides nearly 70% of Dutch households with fiber connections, contributing to over 90% national access when combined with other providers. The company has now raised its target from 80% by 2026 to 85% by 2030, with a sharper focus on connecting and activating households. Through its campaign “Fewer orange sprouts, more green households,” KPN will accelerate fiber installations directly to homes, offering faster, more stable, and sustainable connections compared to copper networks.

Strengthening Cybersecurity and National Digital Resilience
KPN is committing hundreds of millions of euros to bolster cybersecurity and ensure network resilience. Under the leadership of CEO Joost Farwerck, who also serves on the Cyber Security Council, KPN is advancing collaboration between government, industry, and research institutions to safeguard the country’s critical digital infrastructure.

Key initiatives include infrastructure redundancy, continuous security training, and real-time threat monitoring through its DDoS Protection service. KPN is also partnering with its technology subsidiary NL-ix to develop sovereign cloud services for enterprises and public institutions—providing full data control, secure infrastructure, and resilient cloud applications.

In addition, KPN is making cybersecurity more accessible to all customers. Consumer users will soon receive KPN SuperVeilig—a built-in security solution that combines antivirus and malware protection. The upcoming MijnKPN app Security Center will allow users to view and manage their personal security status. Entrepreneurs can enhance their protection through KPN Extra Veilig Internet, a free network-based service that safeguards all connected devices against ransomware, viruses, and phishing attempts via DNS and web filtering.

Driving Digital Growth and Sustainability
KPN’s investments extend beyond connectivity to support innovation through AI, IoT, and quantum technology, positioning the Netherlands among the world’s most advanced digital economies. The telecom operator continues to emphasize sustainability through its #BetterInternet mission, promoting a safer, greener, and more social internet. Despite data traffic increasing 28-fold over the past decade, KPN has halved its energy consumption. Its network has run entirely on green electricity since 2011, and by 2027, around 60% of that will come from CO₂-free sources. By 2030, the company plans for a fully electric vehicle fleet, encouraging employees to cycle to work with incentives of €0.40 per kilometer.

During the Strategy Update, KPN reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable growth, customer-centric innovation, and the digital empowerment of the Netherlands. Financial insights and strategic priorities for the coming years were presented, reinforcing the company’s vision to deliver fast, secure, and future-ready connectivity for all.
