KPN introduces gamified travel app to make expense claims easier and promote sustainable commuting

(IN BRIEF) KPN has launched a new travel expense app that combines convenience with sustainability by linking expense claims to CO2 emissions insights and gamification. Developed with Reisbalans, the app automatically tracks employees’ travel movements, offering visual feedback and comparisons with colleagues to encourage eco-friendly choices such as cycling or taking the train. Starting September 1, 10,000 employees can use the app as part of KPN’s wider package of modern HR initiatives, which include flexible holidays, student loan repayment support, cycling allowances, and contributions toward home sustainability. HR Manager Carlo Steenvoorden said the app is designed to make expense claims easier while promoting greener travel and reinforcing KPN’s commitment to sustainability.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 8-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — KPN has introduced an innovative travel expense app that not only makes submitting claims easier but also encourages employees to choose more sustainable travel options. The app, developed in collaboration with mobility platform Reisbalans, is the first of its kind in the Netherlands to combine expense management with CO2 tracking and gamification.

The mobile app automatically logs travel movements and links them to a personal CO2 dashboard. Employees can track their environmental impact per trip and over longer periods, gaining insight into how their choices contribute to reducing carbon emissions. A playful element adds motivation: cyclists or train travelers are rewarded with positive emojis, while frequent use of petrol cars results in less cheerful feedback. The dashboard also enables colleagues to compare their travel behavior with one another, turning eco-conscious commuting into a shared challenge.

Carlo Steenvoorden, HR Manager at KPN, explained the dual benefits: “We constantly strive to be an attractive and modern employer. This travel app not only makes a routine task easier, but also helps employees see the positive impact of their choices on the environment. At KPN we take sustainability seriously—and we also believe it should be fun.”

From September 1, 10,000 employees will be able to download and use the new app. The initiative complements KPN’s broader HR strategy to create a flexible, forward-looking workplace. Other employee benefits include autonomy in choosing holiday days, attractive repayment options for student loans, a €0.40 net mileage allowance for cyclists, and financial support for insulating and making homes more sustainable. With these measures, KPN aims to offer benefits tailored to every stage of life.
