IRIS2 Satellite Constellation to Enhance Europe’s Connectivity and Technological Sovereignty with Deutsche Telekom’s Support

(IN BRIEF) The European Union’s IRIS2 satellite constellation project aims to build a powerful and secure communication network to strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty. Deutsche Telekom will contribute its expertise in connectivity and IT infrastructure, designing advanced services, secure networks, and 5G capabilities for critical sectors like civil protection, surveillance, and crisis management. The satellite network, with 282 satellites, will ensure reliable broadband connectivity across both urban and rural areas. This collaboration between public and private sectors, led by the SpaceRISE consortium, is key to Europe’s digital future.

(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 5-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Union is taking a major step towards enhancing its digital infrastructure with the IRIS2 satellite constellation (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security via Satellite). This project aims to create a powerful, secure, and independent communication network, reinforcing Europe’s technological sovereignty. Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s leading telecommunications provider, will play a crucial role in this initiative.

Deutsche Telekom’s involvement focuses on its expertise in connectivity and IT infrastructure. The company is tasked with designing advanced IT and data center services, secure wide-area networks (WAN), and a robust 5G core network. This satellite-based connectivity will boost several key areas, including civil protection, surveillance, crisis management, national security, and the protection of critical infrastructure. Additionally, IRIS2 will offer broadband services to B2B customers.

Claudia Nemat, Board Member for Technology & Innovation at Deutsche Telekom, said, “Europe needs secure, modern connectivity, and IRIS2 provides exactly that. It will help reinforce Europe’s technological sovereignty, while Deutsche Telekom continues to contribute to the continent’s cross-border digital infrastructure with a focus on people.”

National Security and Satellite Connectivity Advancements

The IRIS2 project is designed to address critical long-term challenges related to security, safety, and resilience. By offering advanced services to government users and bridging connectivity gaps throughout the European Union, it is instrumental in strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy. The satellite network, which includes 282 satellites in multiple orbits, is set to provide both public and private users with broadband connectivity across rural and urban areas.

Of the 282 satellites, 264 will be positioned in low Earth orbit (LEO) for communication services, while 18 medium-Earth orbit (MEO) satellites will offer global coverage and specialized services. This ambitious initiative lays the groundwork for a digitalized future in Europe, ensuring long-term connectivity for diverse sectors.

A Collaborative Effort Between Public and Private Sectors

The SpaceRISE consortium, consisting of satellite network operators SES, Eutelsat, and Hispasat, will design, deliver, and operate the EU’s innovative IRIS2 multi-orbit connectivity system. This collaborative project ensures that the solutions developed meet the evolving needs of Europe’s digital landscape. In addition to Deutsche Telekom, several prominent subcontractors from various segments of the satellite communications ecosystem are also involved. The SpaceRISE consortium is committed to embracing innovation from across Europe’s supply chain. More information about SpaceRISE can be found at www.spacerise.eu/.
