International Roma Day: OSCE Bosnia and Herzegovina Head Jonathan Moore called on state authorities to allocate necessary resources and implement the Roma Action Plans

SARAJEVO, 9-4-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — On the occasion of the International Roma Day, Head of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina Ambassador Jonathan Moore called today on state authorities to allocate necessary resources and implement the Roma Action Plans on Housing, Education, Health and Employment.

Moore also visited Kakanj to mark the Day and delivered keys for new homes to four Roma families together with local Mayor Nermin Mandra.

“The 8th of April draws attention to the unique and diverse Roma community in Bosnia and Herzegovina which faces enormous socio-economic and political challenges,” said Moore.

“Kakanj stands as an excellent example of joint positive efforts of the municipality and the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees, in providing housing to Roma. Other municipalities and state institutions should follow Kakanj’s example.

“It is important to note that today’s allocation of houses, which is a great success, rather than being the result of the work of the international community, is due to the investment of the municipality’s resources.”

Moore also emphasised that institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina need to meet their obligations and allocate funding necessary for the implementation of the Roma Action Plans on Housing, Education, Health and Employment.

Mayor Mandra said that Kakanj municipality plans to resolve housing issues for eight more families by the end of 2015. “When it comes to problems Roma face there are no partial solutions. They require the engagement of the whole community, and the support of the OSCE Mission in this regard is priceless.”

Avdo Ramić, one of new home owners, stated: “Words can’t describe the happiness I am feeling for getting a new home that I will move into today, during this greatest day for Roma, with my wife and three children.”
