International Maestro Bjorn Bantock Takes Helm of UEA Music Centre to Expand Performance and Education

(IN BRIEF) Bjorn Bantock, an internationally recognized conductor with more than 30 years’ experience, has been named Director of Music at the University of East Anglia. In this capacity, he will manage the Music Centre’s operations and spearhead efforts to integrate music into university and community life through performances, workshops, and outreach. Bantock’s global career includes principal conducting roles with the Irish Memory Orchestra, Bedford Symphony, Peterborough Philharmonic, and numerous international festivals. He emphasizes inclusivity, inviting participants of all skill levels to engage with music. (PRESS RELEASE) NORWICH, 6-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of East Anglia (UEA) has appointed internationally acclaimed conductor Bjorn Bantock as its new Director of Music, entrusting him with leadership of the Music Centre and its mission to keep music integral to campus life and its wider community connections. With over three decades of experience directing orchestras and ensembles across five continents, Bantock brings a dynamic vision that blends performance excellence, educational outreach, and inclusive programming.

In his role, Bantock will oversee the full operation of UEA’s Music Centre, guiding its strategic goals to nurture musical engagement among students, staff, and local residents. He plans to cultivate a collaborative environment in which music unites the university and community through rehearsals, performances, workshops, and festivals.

Bantock’s distinguished conducting career spans Chile, Argentina, Brazil, China, South Africa, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Russia, Malta, Ireland, Norway, and the United Kingdom. He currently serves as Principal Conductor of the Irish Memory Orchestra (touring Europe, Ireland, and South Korea), the Bedford Symphony Orchestra, and the Peterborough Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, he leads the Open Strings Festival in Denmark, the International String Orchestra Festival in Malta—where he founded the event and works with soloists such as Matthias Wollong and Yuko Inoue—the Svanker Music Festival in Denmark, the Alpine Summer School Orchestra in Geneva, and his own London Chamber Strings. He is also a regular guest conductor of the Hertfordshire Philharmonia.
